Keeping Chickens When You Have Arthritis.

Hot flashes....don't miss them at all although I still occasionally get one usually in the middle of the night and I'm flinging off blankets and getting up to hop in the shower or grab a cold wash cloth. Men just don't understand how miserable they are. DH finally got a hint about them when he tried to take Niacin for his cholesterol. Even the no flush ones gave him 'hot flashes'. I remember him saying, I can't stand this. I'm burning up! and I said welcome to menopause!

Weeding is what bothers me most about gardening. My hands are so bad. The Methtrexate has helped my grip a lot and has enabled me to do the quilting and embroidery work that I adore but I still have problems gripping and pulling weeds. We have a blackberry arbor that is full of head high weeds that are going to have to be cleared out by spring. Not looking forward to it but a local winery wants to buy my blackberries. No crop this year due to the heat but there is always next year.

Anybody have any tips on easy weeding with arthritis?
In my boxes because the soil is soft weeds pull out easily and don't really get rooted well.

I never understood hot flashes until they became a regular part of my life. For 4-5 years now. They started out every half hour around the clock. They now are every hour or two and don't last as long but are still exhausting because they never stop and I cannot escape them. I cannot do hormone replacement due to my cancers I dealt with. So it's the price of living I guess. :hmm

I have HOPE for the first time in over a year! The prednisone and MTX did nothing for my inflammatory arthritis except give me a staph infection from immunosuppression.... I started taking lots of anti-inflammatory supplements when I quit the meds. I then went on an elimination diet ( really didn’t think food was an issue but had lots of stomach issues and I was desperate! 3 weeks of no gluten, dairy eggs sugar, nightshades! I reintroduced gluten during holiday and had severe gastric distress all 3 times I tried eating gluten. 4 th time was small piece of cake and no stomach bloating but severe small joint pain and brain fog with severe fatigue- in bed all day. No gluten Very little joint pain. Eggs no problem, dairy no problem, nightshades no problem!
I am beginning to actually believe I am gluten intolerant!! I tested negative for celiac. I have been a critic of the whole gluten free trend and now may be eating my words! It is amazing the difference in my pain levels!!! If I can give up gluten and feel close to normal again- will be so worth it!!!!
That would be wonderful. I don't think today's gluten is the same as it used to be. They have done something to it. I no longer can eat wheat bread without severe heartburn. So I have started to avoid wheat as much as possible. Something just isn't right with it. I think Dr. Oz called it Frankenwheat.

Every year since I got spayed I have burned hotter and hotter. It sounds so harmless, but is very disruptive and makes me not want to go places. I also don't sleep through the night anymore, it's all tossing and turning. I run a fan on myself at night all year round. Husband has to adapt otherwise he doesn't want the alternative. :)

I went through menopause at 25 that is when I was Spayed ... When Graves Disease hit hot flashes returned but no flash then 24/7

Ummmm I vote for NO. I was taking hormone replacement and became sicker than a dog. Could hardly function. They finally sent me to a OB/GYN who took one look at my symptoms and said, I know exactly what is wrong with you.You are estrogen sensitive. Your body is reacting to even low dose HRT. You need to stop all hormones now and do this cold turkey. The next 8 weeks are going to be hell but you will start to feel better then. He was right. the next 7.5 weeks were horrible but by week 8 I was feeling better. I still have occasional hot flashes/sweats even after 12 years of going cold turkey but I would never try HRT again. Yes my joints have suffered but no way I would ever want to feel like that again.

I had a doctor once tell me that hot flashes were all in a woman's head. I worked with the guy so felt a little empowered when I leaned forward and told him that what if I kicked him where no man wants to be kicked and then told him that the pain was all in his head? He took a step back and said 'point taken'. He never made that comment around me again, although once when I pointed out that I was growing facial hair (I had stein/leventhal syndrome) and he said 'oh that isn't too bad' I asked him how he would feel if he woke up one morning and discovered he'd grown breasts and when he went to his doc his doc told him oh don't worry, those aren't boobs aren't too bad.

I've often wondered if I ever taught that young doctor anything about tact?:smack

Since they have been testing me for Gout I've been taking stock of what I eat and my responses to it. I've cut out red meat and have noticed less foot pain. Last night ate ice cream with high fructose corn syrup and today my fingers have been hurting me. Set here at my computer tonight eating another small bowl of ice cream and suddenly saw the correlation. Told DH I would have to see how my fingers felt in the morning but....

So this new diet is high on veggies and milk products, okay on fruits, especially bananas and only so so on fruits like apples and pears. Meat only 3 days a week 4 at the most. So it is really promoting veganism which I'm not real big on but it's big on eggs and cheeses with chicken meat three days a week.

Man I would kill for a Payday Candybar.:drool

Yeah I made spaghetti last night also and while I put meat in DH's I saved out a serving for myself and added some mushrooms and chopped tomato to it to give it a little substance.

May have to opt for a different type of sauce although I did find a gout friendly diet that called for bar b que sauce and chicken in stead of the common fair. I'll have to try that and do an elimination test on it.
