Keeping Chickens When You Have Arthritis.

Welcome @starri33!

Nobody can say that arthritis discriminates. It's an equal opportunity pain in the backside.

I'd love to have a golf cart! They are so popular where we live. People in town drive the all over. Not unusual to see three or four parked outside the grocery store. The town is so small that people opt to drive them around then their cars and even enclose them for winter months. DH wants a mini truck with a dump bed on it and I'd go for one of those also. RIght now I'm trying to keep active and taking care of my flock figures into that plan.

@oldhenlikesdogs. Bursitis in both hips? OUCH! I've had it in one hip before after doing Relay For Life. I walked something like 46 miles and paid for it afterwards. Now it's just plain old arthritis especially in the left hip which has osteoporosis going on in it now. Looking into my crystal ball I see in my future ...wait....it's clearing yes I see it now...hip replacement. Seriously, I hope not but I'm realistic.
I'm severely hoping bursitis doesn't become bad hips. I don't want all my big joints replaced. :( My younger brother already had one hip done, and an older brother can barely walk but refuses to get his hips done. Our parents made us do hard farm labor as kids.

I'm hoping my bursitis is from the knee replacement since it's just recently been bugging me. My other hip was from sitting on my weeder wagon and leaning forward. I no longer weed like that.

As far as gardening my husband built me raised boxes to plant in that come up to my waist so gardening is enjoyable again, and pretty easy. Most of my flowers I plant in pots and put in my perennial beds which my husband weeds occasionally for me.

Many moons ago when I was young and stupid, I was heavily intoxicated and needed to take a leak.... we were in a car on the highway but I had to go NOW so driver pulled over. It was dark and I managed to stumble right into a ditch, didn't judge the distance down below because I couldn't see so my leg kept extending to make contact and then I heard a very loud, "POP!". I swear it sounded like a firecracker went off, it was loud. Anyway, it's been years now and thankfully even after that loud pop in my knee, it didn't seem to affect me at all. My question is, what exactly made that loud pop noise from my knee and should I be worry about it further down the road?
Once took a tumble sober (because that's how I am - graceful) and twisted my elbow. It hurt for a bit, but then healed up fine. Now about 20 yrs later it aches almost everyday.
Btw, every time I read your threads I hear Bobby's voice from King of the Hill. :lau

I am 7 weeks out from my second knee replacement. I also have replaced shoulders. The one they want to reverse the implant because I have no functioning rotator cuff. :th My first knee was harder because they had to remove dead bone caused by chemotherapy. This knee is doing much better. :clap Mine is all from wear and tear, and perhaps a twist of juvenile diabetes.
Yikes. You are like the bionic woman!

@starri33 Have to agree completely there are days it is hard as get out to get out there to clean right now out weather is being very friendly to me where do you live ?
I am in AZ, right between Bullhead and Kingman. Weather has finally gotten where you can do more than just sit there drinking water.. This "Dry" heat is about to kill me..lol,

Winter is hell on arthritis. The cold makes everything worse except for the hot flashes, those are better in winter, whatever better means as far as constant hot flashes go. :) My new knee is better than the old, unfortunately the hip on that side is giving me grief today. I guess I have bursitis in both hips now. :barnie

I think I know that “hot flash” feeling! (I’m ALWAYS hot, so who knows, it could just be me...) I tell my hubby that one day he’s going to come back from his walk and find a damp pile of ash in the chair where I used to be...

Hot flashes....don't miss them at all although I still occasionally get one usually in the middle of the night and I'm flinging off blankets and getting up to hop in the shower or grab a cold wash cloth. Men just don't understand how miserable they are. DH finally got a hint about them when he tried to take Niacin for his cholesterol. Even the no flush ones gave him 'hot flashes'. I remember him saying, I can't stand this. I'm burning up! and I said welcome to menopause!

Weeding is what bothers me most about gardening. My hands are so bad. The Methtrexate has helped my grip a lot and has enabled me to do the quilting and embroidery work that I adore but I still have problems gripping and pulling weeds. We have a blackberry arbor that is full of head high weeds that are going to have to be cleared out by spring. Not looking forward to it but a local winery wants to buy my blackberries. No crop this year due to the heat but there is always next year.

Anybody have any tips on easy weeding with arthritis?

I don't have any tips specifically for weeding, but I have a bottle of prednisone that I only use on days I know I'm going to overdo it. Like going to State Fair or the family camping trip days. If I was planning a gardening day, I might take one then. My rheumatologist has ok'd using it this way. But to be honest a lot of my weeding is spur of the moment. I see a weed, pull it, then see another and so on, lol. And being in the city, my gardens aren't really big, but I do have a lot of them. My wildflower garden only needs minimal weeding now. And my husband does some too.

I have HOPE for the first time in over a year! The prednisone and MTX did nothing for my inflammatory arthritis except give me a staph infection from immunosuppression.... I started taking lots of anti-inflammatory supplements when I quit the meds. I then went on an elimination diet ( really didn’t think food was an issue but had lots of stomach issues and I was desperate! 3 weeks of no gluten, dairy eggs sugar, nightshades! I reintroduced gluten during holiday and had severe gastric distress all 3 times I tried eating gluten. 4 th time was small piece of cake and no stomach bloating but severe small joint pain and brain fog with severe fatigue- in bed all day. No gluten Very little joint pain. Eggs no problem, dairy no problem, nightshades no problem!
I am beginning to actually believe I am gluten intolerant!! I tested negative for celiac. I have been a critic of the whole gluten free trend and now may be eating my words! It is amazing the difference in my pain levels!!! If I can give up gluten and feel close to normal again- will be so worth it!!!!

Every year since I got spayed I have burned hotter and hotter. It sounds so harmless, but is very disruptive and makes me not want to go places. I also don't sleep through the night anymore, it's all tossing and turning. I run a fan on myself at night all year round. Husband has to adapt otherwise he doesn't want the alternative. :)
