Probably so. I just suggested securing the hardware cloth since OP had expressed concerns about price and an inability to set up electric.

You need to research electric fencing.

It needs to pulse. A car battery does not allow that and is very unsafe for that application.

You have said you have small children. DC is direct current (which is what a car battery is) causes muscle contraction not allowing the victim to release the wire. Not a good outcome for a small human child.

Electric fencing pulses....alternating current which is called AC and is what a house runs on has gaps in the zap allowing the victim a chance to release and get away.

You have hardware cloth already.....now practice closing the doors.

I look at it like if I can pull out the staples from hardware cloth so can a dog.

That is why I like to point out that there are fence/poultry staples and Arrow type staples. The former are U shaped and near impossible to get out shy digging into the wood to get under the U with a pointed tool. The former will pop out just by pulling on the hardware cloth. For hardware cloth installation they are ONLY good for positioning it prior to fixing it properly.

Plus electrifying the fence meant to contain the chickens is a sure fire way to kill any remaining chickens OP supposedly has left.
