Keeping dogs away

Those dogs sound like they will cause big problems in the future.

SSS them.

Shoot
Shovel
Shutup

Or shoot them and lay them by the road so they look like they got hit.
Trust me, done right this really does work

You have make it look like they got hit, not shot then dumped by the road.

you really should return the dead animal to their rightful owners, do the right thing and return them for a descent burial! I try and do it when their not home so as not cause a confrontation, just lay the poor unfortunate dog next the owners porch then lay the dead chickens on top with a note that this is a general rule at your farm to kill all chicken killing trespassing good for nothing mutts. Seems to work here! If this happens to be a stray....let the buzzards eat!

the prey drive for dogs is really really strong - especially two or more dogs together. unless you unleash such a fury on those dogs you wont be able to 'train them to stay away' - especially if the owners cant even keep them in their own yard

If you use cattle panels, you might want to run a strand of electric over the top and about a foot off the bottom. I've seen dogs climb fences like ladders. If the shock on the bottom won't deter them, the one on top will when they grab it to launch over.

If your neighbor is really as nice as she appears, and you have no problem communicating with her, you might ask her to put a double collar on them until she finds a way to contain them properly. If she really can't contain them, she needs to kennel them. They're really not that expensive and she can link them together to make a bigger pen if she wants.

But I agree with danielbrown, they'll be a problem in the future. Once they know where a free meal will be, they'll keep coming back. But I do think the panels with electric might work. If the dogs are important to her, she'll find a way to keep them in.

I've seen in other posts similar to this that a paintball gun works well. Havent tried this myself ( I prefer a high powered rifle ) but it seems reasonable and is non-lethal.

I would add to that a BB gun, especially if you live somewhere using a shotgun might be prohibited. Plus they are cheaper than a shotgun.

I would not advise killing the dogs.

Here where I live, everyone lets their dogs run. That's one reason a lot of folks live in the country. It's a symbol of their freedom. That and guns. I know if I kill one of their dogs, I'm taking my life in my hands. If not, I at least lost a friend.

Me, I have a dog who does most of the protecting. She keeps other critters including dogs off my property. She has lost a couple of fights, but not before convincing the other dogs trespassing on her turf isn't worth the trouble. She considers my birds part of the pack and is very protective of them.

Of course, you would need a fence for that, so back to square one.

Got a BB gun?

Electric fence is a good idea until your able to get a fenced in yard, and I agree a dog that can bite thru wood like that is one scary animal!

I would recommend this:

Paintballs and pellet guns sound nice, but they have 2 drawback:
1. They are nonlethal, and bruising or injuring a dog (even if it is on your property causing damage) can get you charged with cruelty to animals. In most places it's legal to kill them, but not to injure them
2. If the the dogs have a strong prey drive, paintballs and pellets won't stop them. My neighbor has repeatedly shot another neighbor's problem dogs with a pellet gun, and they still came back.

Legal actions with restitution and fines make dog owners more responsible, and bullets make their dogs less of a nuisance. BTW many breeds of dogs with strong prey drive aren't stopped by a fence. They jump over or dig under them. Trust me on that. My neighbors have their dogs in a fence, but it is useless and they know it. The next time they are in my yard, they're dead. I won't let them kill any more of my animals.
