Keeping dogs away

Along with a electric fence I would try to find the owners and tell them what happened, let them know you don't even like the thought of killing their dogs so maybe the two of you could think up something so they can keep their dogs home.

Did you ever find a solution? I was going to suggest shooting a gun in the air, if the dog is gun shy, but I see this post is from 2009? I'm trying to figure out how to keep our outside done from pestering our chickens. He's a tough dog and must of a high tolerance of pain (he fights and kills snapping turtles and groundhogs), so I don't know if electric fence would work or not to keep him away.

Hey...Don't know if it would work for y'all, but we had a lot of success keeping dogs away using a paint ball gun. Of course, try n talk to owners first but if that fails, the paint ball stings pretty bad and leaves a nice bright paint spot. Sometimes both dog and owner get the message. Let's the owner know you don't want to shoot the dog but will if need be.

I'd check with your local Animal Control, or the police, before shooting anything non-lethal at a pet. In some areas, it's considered animal cruelty, and can get you in trouble, but killing the predatory dog may be totally legal. The paintball gun sounds like fun, though! Mary

There should be laws written that people who own dogs MUST have them behind chain link fencing with a solid floor/edging so dig out isn't possible.

No there shouldn't.
I have 3 1/2 acres fenced in for our dogs. It isn't chain link and its well over 1,000 feet of fence.
I'd be damned if I would invest in that much chain link and skirt it.
People should keep their dogs on their property however they choose and if they don't then they should expect there's a chance they aren't coming home.
Around here if you don't want the resposibiity someone will quickly releave you of it.
