We have a hanging feeder similar to this and I am having a hard time figuring out how to keep the feed from getting wet. I took it out of the run, because I read the horror stories of rat problems. The chickens free range on 1/2 acre fenced in yard during the day. I started off under the deck and every time it rained it was a soupy mess. I put it under our old wooden playset (under an old roof, and a deck) and that was working pretty well until we had torrential rains (common here in GA) and once again it was a soupy mess. I am worried about mold in the food if it is getting wet.

My carpentry skills aren't very good. I need simple, cheap options, or ideas on how to protect the feed. Pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Today, I have a golf umbrella tied to a pole over the food. I NEED HELP :)

My feeder (similar to yours ) is in the run, it sits on landscape pavers and is covered with an inverted dog water dish. This helps unless our rain or snow come sideways <G>.

Can you put up a tarp style tent? I give my flock fermented feed, so a little water is not going to ruin the feed. But, I put the feeders in the run, under cover. If there is any left at the end of the day, I put the feeders in the coop for the night to keep them vermin free.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow There are lots of different bucket designs that work well for most, I loved the pie plate idea as well... But alas, I've given up on anything hanging or covering as sure as the sun will rise, I'll find one or more turkeys perching on it and it's amazing how much damage a couple 45 pound turkey's can do...:barnie So I now feed everyone twice a day from troughs.
