Keeping Kitty Off Counters, Etc.

Never leave food on the counter to start with. Don't tempt them. And every time they jump up there, shove them down. Don't let them up there for ANY reason. Braking habbits are hard. A squirt gun might do it. But you need to change the behavior. Give extra treats on the floor if you have to.

And we cant have mandarin oranges to eat....that is his favourite treat and cries piteously till he gets some. He has even been seen trying to get this cute whiskers into our OJ glasses ....

Need to make it seem like its an act of god to scare them off and keep them off counters. They are smart and pick it up quickly that YOU spray them. Motion dectector thing like the scat mat or the blender trick < do a google lol> seem to help, cos its not the people present doing it. They will just not do it when you are there....the trick is to make them do it when you are not there.

Duh. The answer is simple.

Go build your own work bench and buy your own tools. Cats get tired of sharing.

I'm gonna invest in a few of the motion sensor air cans, but for now I'm using foil. They hate the foil!! I've got one who raids the bread basket, tearing open the bread bags

Draping a piece of foil over it keeps them away. I lay out sheets on the counter sometimes too, and they stay away... They even run when I'm tearing off a sheet of it for some reason???

Okay, see, that right there - I want to see just where the cat 'aint supposed to scratch.

I want to give the cats their own place to play, Terrie, but that aint really practical at this time. I did ask them about it and they liked the idea, although they didn't seem inclined to help in the least... being cats and all.

I have learned about the tin foil, sticky tape, cookie sheet and orange peel tricks, and they have the benefit of working when I'm away. "Interactive" deterrents like water sprays have the desired effect, but they mostly just teach kitty to avoid me; expecting me to go psycho water bath on their a** whenever I hove into sight is not the lesson I want them to learn.

Cats aren't s'pose to scratch the door jam to the office when there are THREE scratching posts just a few feet away. She's also not s'pose to eat out of anyone's dish but her own, kill my chickens, or antagonize the dog.
I only put up with her because she's not big enough for target practice.
I'll settle for her not scratching the door jam.

If your cheap like me, just try putting a very wet towel on your counter and one on the bench if you can. You may have to do this for some period of time until they learn that counter/bench = water. Also, I recommend getting a cat "tree" - it will seem much more appealing then a wet counter top.

My MIL is having to deal with her (40yr old loser) son's stupid cat Claws... demon spawn got up there and stole a whole package of salmon that was defrosting. That was after the other incidents I won't go into. Touch my salmon and you're a dead kitty.
