I am going to have a fairly small coop and am looking to see what others have done as a solution to keeping shavings out of their food and water.
I know some people hang them, but that may not be the best option for me. Should I put them up on a block? What have you all done?
Thanks,
Steve

We keep the water up on a block. It is recommended that it be no more than shoulder height. Hope this helps.

You can see it at the site below. Opps, in order to see the waterer, I need to go out and move a bale of hay. Take a look in 30 minutes!

I use paver blocks which are easy to clean. I dont not have a problem with shavings anymore, of course a few do get in, but just a few.

Here is my summer waterer, it hangs above the litter, there's aonther one outside. The block in front of it elevates my winter waterer. Feeder also hangs above the litter also. Again a galvinized feeder hangs outside. No problems...

We use PVC tubes to put the feed in that are mounted off the ground.

We only use buckets once the chickens are grown. We don't use the chicken waterers. We just leave the buckets sitting on the ground in their yard, it isn't in their tractor. the buckets are easy to clean and take back and forth to the house/hose- I rotate 2-3 of them. Plus our handles broke on the waterer after a couple months and they were a pain to refill and clean.

my coop is small too, I put the nesting box high enough to hang the food and water from, to get them both off the floor. It's a little crowed for them all to eat, but I have 6 roos (5 will go to freezer camp) so there will be more room soon.

I had an idea after seeing the PVC. Has anyone ever used 'gutters' as troughs (sp?).
I was thinking I could get a 10' x 5" piece of Vinyl or Aluminum Gutter, trim two 12''-18" pieces+/-, put some end caps on them and mount to the side(inside) of the coop at the desired height?
One for water, the other for food? Because of the way gutters mount to the brackets, they would be removable as well... Thoughts?
