Keeping shavings out of their water

In the Brooder

So my 15 chicks have a waterer in their brooder, but they keep getting their bedding (pine shavings) in it. I put it on top of a popcorn lid (not too tall) last night, but this morning there was bedding in the water again.

Any suggestions? They are only 10 days old, so I was worried about it being too high for them to drink out of if I used anything taller.

this is what they have --

Nipple waterers solve that issue....you can make your own cheaply. Chicks are quick learners.
But if you stick to the other kind, what I did before nipple waterers, was have that part of brooder cage with no shavings. It has a wire mesh floor
The shavings area had a barrier they could hop over but it kept most of the debris out of the water.

Putting an eve on it prevents them from climbing into the water or poop falling into it from above if they perch on top of the bottle. However it doesn't prevent stuff from being kicked into it as they scratch around. The best way I have found to prevent this is to raise the waterer. How high depends on how big the chickens are.

Or use a nipple feeder as some have suggested.

I hung it up - that should solve our issues. I went to Orschlen's for a nipple waterer but they only had the huge 5 gallon bucket ones.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/how-to-hang-a-chick-water-bottle.957712/#post-14899607 This will show you how to rig a plastic chick water bottle to hang it. No more shavings in the water.

But since I invented that, I've gone to vertical nipples. You can buy the nipple kits at most feed stores and make a nipple water bottle out of any old discarded plastic soda bottle. Install the nipple in the plastic lid, screw back onto the bottle, invert, drill a couple holes at the other end of the bottle to string wire through to hang it. These holes also act as a vent so the water will come out of the nipples.

Change to nipples or elevate the waterer making sure that small steps are there for the chicks to hop up to get to the water.

I use a 8x8 cinder block works very well.
