Why not try some utility 'cloth' available in various widths and lengths. I use this as fencing for beans and peas to climb. Also great for tomatoes since I can reach through for harvest. It is spot-welded into rectangular shapes. Something like 2 inches by 4 inches. It's light weight, not terribly expensive, lasts a long time, and you could even grow peas and beans on it at the same time you're keeping your birds off the patio.
