Keeping the water clean

While my chickens are free ranging, they prefer to drink out of our dogs' 5 gallon water bowl that sits on the front patio. I have a thing like you have, but they don't drink out of it so I stopped using it. Mine are 10 weeks old, though.

ive got one of those ones and its in my brooder the chicks keep filling it with the pine shaveings i think i have to clean it out about 6 times a day but im thinking about hanging it some how so it will stay cleaner in my coop im planing on setting it up on some blocks and haveing a pice of hardware screen under it to keep the bedding dry that way the water will drain onto the ground
