Hello KYTinpusher , Welcome to the forum. You will find lots of good post on here dealing with the subject of raising chickens. This site also has several post dealing with it.
Thanks, Chicken Review, but I think you meant k8chicks.

I've been here for quite awhile and chicken math has already taken it's toll - 65+/- chickens of eight different breeds and a few projects, as well as ducks and turkeys! Shhh...

don't tell k8chicks what she is getting herself into.

Hi KYTinpusher We will keep it from them for now. They will find out soon enough! :) People sometimes get involved and just can't stop. Like eating Lays Potato Chips, ya just can't stop at one! :) My neighbor started out with just a hand full of chickens last year and now she has around 100! Lol.. She is now including Guineas into her flock..It may never end!! ... k8chicks, well, who knows where this will lead them? :)

I started many years ago with one mixed breed hen and one mixed breed rooster..LOOK what happened to me!! 12+breeds of chickens, 6 breeds of ducks..(just added Mallards and Mandarins), 4 breeds of geese ( just added Toulouse for next year), 3 breeds of turkeys, about 30 Guineas and Pygmy goats. Adding Katahdin sheep soon.

My secret?? Don't count them..no one can say you have too many, if you don't know how many you have.. So I never have to justify it!!

Haha- well, we have restrictions based on location, so I don't know that I'll get too carried away :) I'm trying to figure out what we will do for a coop, since my subdivision doesn't allow for structures to be built. May just bend the rules a little...ssshhhh!

Use a chicken tractor - it is movable so can not be considered a "structure".

There are great ideas here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-tractors-mobile-chicken-coop-designs (they don't call me a master enabler for nothing!

Well, I saw a metal building like the older ones converted to a small coop. Maybe you could buy a tool shed and convert half of it into a coop. Use the other half for your tools, mowers, etc. It would still be a tool shed that your chickens are using. Just a thought. :)

Unfortunately, no sheds. I think my best bet may be something on wheels. Either way, something I don't invest a ton into, in case someone gets mad and rats me out.
I spoke with my neighbors across the street (we are really close with our neighbors) and they were supportive :)

I live in Bullitt county 15 minutes south of Louisville. As a kid we always had chickens on the farm and remember as a kid pulling pieces of shells off hatching chicks cause we thought they needed our help. So I have kids of my own and wanted them to have the same experience I did. So far they had a blast watching the chicks hatch out of the incubator and catching older cjicks to hold. I have 2 breeds here orpingtons which I am getting out of and BLRW'S. I can not say how much I habe enjoyed the blrws. I have 1 rooster and 6 hens. With a yard full of chicks we have incubated.

Another idea is to find one of the Playschool kid's playhouse, preferably used on craigslist or at a garage sale. Fortify with hardware cloth and you have a stealth chicken coop. If you can't have a playhouse, neither can your neighbors.
