Yeah, I attached it to a metal electrical box, like you suggested. It works fine. But when I put in a smaller dish for humidity problems, the temp didn't rise so well - I think the crockery dish I had to hold water before held the heat really well - still tweeking on it, but it works really well.

Wow, very cheap, but this time of year, I'm leery of buying shipped eggs. I'm waiting to see if the orp eggs hatch well since they were shipped when it was so cold down here last week.

I do love the black australorps, though - they are so sweet and funny.

I may try to find someone closer who has hatchign eggs - someone I can pick them up from, instead of having them shipped usps.

On the orp eggs, I threw out one that was clear, have another I'm not sure of, but 12 all look good for sure so far. I can't wait til those hatch, the buff orps are so pretty!!!

I think that first chick that hatched on the last batch (I think it's a rock) is a little roo. The rir chick has more feathers than anyone else in the cage. The cochin babies are getting lots of leg feathers.

If Cindy takes BC back, I'll probably put the little jap in with them, since they'll be about the same size by then - the jap will be a little bigger. I may put the cochins into their own cage and put the Jap in with the mixes, though - for crowding reasons. 8 growing chicks in those cages is pushing it. Plus the mixes are a bit more aggressive than the cochin babies, they'd be able to hold their own with a bit bigger chick thrown into the mix.

I'd like some Delawares, but from what I've been reading lately, I want some from a breeder, not a hatchery. Apparently the hatcheries are selling Columbian Rocks as Delawares - which is fine if ya just want them to look sorta the same, but the Delawares have larger chests (I've read) and the Rocks have larger legs and thighs. I want to be able to have some bigger breasted birds for my meaty mixes. I may just have to break down and get a Cornish Roo. From pictures (never saw one in person) they are sort of odd looking

Well, gonna go check on Mom's dog - I guess they left this morning to go get breakfast somewhere, and took one dog but not the other. (At least I hope they took the other dog, because it is nowhere to be found, here).

You could always put some more vent holes in the hatcher, then if the humidity gets too high open them up. Or just leave that bowl in there for heat control and put a smaller dish in it for the water.

Yeah, That's my next move - put the crock bowl back in and put the smaller bowl on top of it.

I just haven't gotten around to doing anything today besides feed critters and sit here reading BYC

Hey, I worked my butt off for two days to make dinner for yesterday - I get to be lazy this morning

Two days??? I started mine at 8 am yesterday and it was done by noon! But I cheated a lot too, you know instant mashed, stove top, and stuff like that. I even made a cheescake from a box instead of a real one! Just lazy I tell ya! I will be good for Christmas and make a real one, might even make a real apple pie to, instead of using the filler from the can.

Oh did I tell ya I have 19 baby buttons now?

Cindy, I am so sorry for your loss.

I have some Australorp mixed eggs I can ship you if you are going to hatch. My roo is a Welsummer.

Let me know and I will start collecting for you and get them in the mail.

Thank you all for your thoughtfulness and great ideas, which will be utilized.

Good news...My male Millie wandered home(YAY!!). And Ron(DH) went to talk to the folks across the street again today and they only have a small house dog...But after hearing about the mass death, he told Ron he had a Faverolle roo he'd like to give to Layne(DS). He said it belongs to his dad and is his dads pride and joy...Sadly, his dad is now in a nursing home and can no longer care for his pets, so the gentleman wants Layne to have it and take care of it. So we will now be building a special pen for this roo and maybe find him some girlys in the Spring to keep him company. That brightened Laynes day.
I have also purchased a male and female Cochin bantams and a Delaware roo from a very nice lady who lives not too far from my parents.

Hubby is being very lenient lately about hatching more eggs to build back up the flock....I know this sounds mean but if you knew my hubby you'd understand why I say I'm going to milk this leniency he has given for a couple more hatches at least.

Did I say that?!

Coolness on the babies, can't wait to see them next week.

Yeah, I did all my baking wednesday - then just did dinner thursday. I was gonna make homemade bread, too - but after making pumpkin pie, mincemeat bars, brownies and cranberry bread, I gave up on the baking.

For dinner I made turkey (of course) and baked sweet taters, mashed taters, dressing, cranberry sauce, and um.... corn, and.... I'm sure there was something else (gravy...) and other stuff

. Anyway, I got leftovers, to fix into something tomorrow (tonight we had pizza

It's cool, PM'd ya back.

That's neat about the rooster for Layne. I think I'd bake that neighbor a batch of cookies

And yeah, milk that leniency for all you can get
lau.gif
- read up further to see what my own hubby's been up to lately - he wants me to get more laying hens for spring!!! Can ya believe it?

I think I'll probably have my hands full of babies, for now, with the hatching. I have 7 babies (plus two of Cindy's hatched babies) and 13 eggs in the bator, and Cindy is bringing me a couple of cochin eggs.

I appreciate the offer though
