Ok, got two "first eggs" today
big_smile.png

I got a call duck egg and a jumbo quail egg

I am wondering if the call duck eggs will get bigger, since this one is a first egg.

Ok, first pic is of a chicken egg, the call duck egg (green one), the jumbo quail egg and a button egg.

This pic is just the quail eggs, the call duck egg and a quarter for comparison.

I have my front door open and it is GORGEOUS out there!!! I saved the steaks and margaritas until today, it was way too windy to grill yesterday - gonna be a good day to grill today.

I may have to get off here and go sit on my porch and have a cup of tea
big_smile.png
I miss sitting on my porch and enjoying the view - although the view is still pretty grey looking right now.

Too bad the duckies and chickies weren't a little older, I'd take them out to have a romp in the yard.

eta - No, the doilie isn't dingy,

it is gold colored.

I don't know about the duck egg, but the quail egg should get a lot bigger than that! The ones these guys hatched from were huge!

Oh, and what is it about the birds you get off me? They always seem to lay before mine do!! I wonder if mario49's have layed any yet?

It was a first quail egg, too - so I imagine both will get bigger. I only had one quail egg out of the jumbo cage. Maybe they like being "outside" - I have them in a cage inside the lower coop, remember. Then again, it may just be the "mojo" floating around here

Everyone (the poultry) had a blast today. The donkeys were in heaven - they were scratching themselves on the cedar trees trying to wipe off their winter coats
lau.gif
. Lily is shedding like mad, I must have pulled a half a dog out of her coat today.

The ducks swam and swam off and on all day, except Chewtoy - that poor little guy, that blue drake has been roughing him up again. I have him and Bossy sleeping in the chicken coop with George and his girls, again, so he can have some peace from the blue drake. I am hoping the conflict is just because it is breeding season, and things will calm down once they aren't so ... hormonal.

My neighbor came by for eggs, (only had 8 eggs, his dad got 4 dozen last night
gig.gif
) and he saw the baby duckies and is planning to buy a few off me once I figure out which ones I want to keep. The chickens have picked up on laying, though, if he had come by later he'd have had a whole dozen.

The T-bones were "to die for" and the salad was great - and the margarita... well, all I can say is "come on over anytime, Jose' "

Well, gonna cruise a bit and catch up on all I missed today.

Well, Cindy had them all together, so I would say it's because it is breeding season. I believe she would pen them up seperately for breeding. It must have been Bossy that laid, since the other girls are new.

I was going to put my quail in the building today, but by the time I finally got around to it, it was starting to cool off. I didn't think it was a good idea to move them when it wasn't warm.

It was almost hot today! I couldn't believe how beautiful it was!! I took all my baby ducks outside for the day. I'm going to put a doghouse or something in their 'pen' tomorrow, so they can stay out. I used my little decorative flowerbed fencing as their 'fence'. Of course, I twist-tied some chicken wire around it, cause it's too short for the big ducks, and the holes are too big for the little ducks. One of my cayuga babies is trying to quack.
wee.gif
That is great, cause I don't plan on keeping any of the males. I have plenty already! I think another one is as well, but I'm not sure. The rouen babies are still peeping their heads off. I think Puddle just started early, she was quacking at 2 weeks. The cayugas are 4 weeks, and the rouens are about 3.

One of my young roos has decided that he really doesn't like Cristian. Cris thinks it's funny. That little roo will chase Cris if he gets too close! I don't know what he did to the roo, but he doesn't like Cris at all!! It was pretty funny, Cris was even laughing. Now, if the roo actually gets him, I'm sure it will be a different story.

Puppies were all over the place today!! They are so cute! There is one in particular that absolutely LOVES Cristian. He picks her up and she licks his face. Giggle city again. We had a good day...

Yeah, but the whole reason she sold me the pair was the other two drakes were beating up on him - I was hoping it wouldn't be so bad with the one drake gone. The poor guy looks like a mile of bad road. His feathers are so roughed up and icky looking. I'll just have to try to keep them apart until breeding season winds down, and then maybe they'll get along better.

I'll check tomorrow morning to see which coop has a green egg in it, and then I'll know if it was Bossy or not. I have not seen Chewtoy breed her (he is so roughed up) but the Blue drake is going to town on those other two ducks.

If I provided a nest box would the quail lay eggs in it? or would they just lay the egg anywhere like the buttons do?

Oh, Bruce and I are going to Cindy's tomorrow to pick up that cage and the incubator, did you want her brooder bins? I can pick them up and bring them to my house, that way they'll be closer, anyway, and I can bring em over the next time I see ya, or you can come here to pick them up - it'll be closer than Cindy's house for ya, anyway. Let me know.

I'm not sure if I'll need them. If I put my ducks outside, I'll have those two totes to put them in. I'll let you know before you go though. But I'm really thinking I won't need them.

The quail would just drop the eggs anywhere. Buttons would be more likely to use a nest box than jumbos would. Have you tried to get your buttons to brood their own? I wonder if they would. There are a lot of people that say theirs do, so it would be worth a shot. Ny buttons usually lay their eggs in their dust bath bowl, so I guess that's kind of the nest box concept.

Come to think of it, I would take those bins after all, that way I can seperate my buttons. Plus I have button and pharoah eggs in the bator, so I'll need somewhere to put them.

So you are getting yet another incubator?
gig.gif
what do you need with that one? I thought you just bought one!

I wish I would have taken that blue boy back that I gave her. Mine doesn't seem to have white ears
sad.png
He should, since mama and daddy both did, but maybe he's one of Gertie's chicks? I don't think so, so I don't know what the deal is with that. I still haven't talked to bluedog about that btw pullet. Cindy said he was buying all her chickens
sad.png
That stinks, I figured that would happen. Oh well, at least I have one pair anyway. I think I might just go through one of the hatcheries and buy the birds that I can't find, it would be easier than getting eggs or looking for birds. You wouldn't think it would be so hard to find some roos, but I can't find the ones I want.

Well, if ya don't need all of them, I will take one - not sure how many there are.

Yeah, I'm getting her other incubator - hubby decided we needed it
lau.gif
he is hooked on hatching eggs (mostly so we can sell the babies
roll.png
)

He is right, though, I will probably need one for duck eggs, since they are different from chicken eggs to incubate. Besides, I only have THREE now
wink.png
what's one more?

Ok, well, I'll grab the brooder bins tomorrow, too, then, and hang onto them at my house til I see ya again.

I'm gonna get off here and go take a shower and kick back awhile.

Hmm... maybe I ought to clean the duckie brooder first - THEN take my shower
