I was looking at fruit trees the other day at Lowes - wanted some nectarines and some newer apple trees.

would be cool to have citrus trees here - maybe a dwarf tree I could store in the garage over winter (in a big pot). I'd love to have a lime tree (to go with Jose'

)

btw, Jose' is invited to my house tonight, after I pick Jon up from work....

Can you plant dwarf trees in big pots?? I was looking at the apple trees at Lowes but I didn't know if we had a good place to plant it, and I don't want to plant something like that then end up moving in a year...

I did see in one seed catalog they had a dwarf citrus that had nectarines, lemons and limes (grafted) that you could ptu in a pot - I'd just want lime, though, myself.

When I worked at Kmart a few years ago, they had those 1/2 whiskey barrels. Those are perfect for a small citrus tree! You could actually keep it in your house, since I'm pretty sure they fruit in the winter. I know oranges do, but I don't know about the mini trees. You should look there and other places to see if you can find a couple of those barrels.
I'm going to have pomegranate trees, provided I don't kill them! I bought some seeds off ebay, they were only $.80 for 5, so we'll see how they do. I don't know if they can be left outside in this climate though? I hope so!! It would stink if they froze out

I love pomegranites

that would be cool if they'll survive in our climate.

I went out and watered Rusty and his coop pal ( a NH roo). As always when I opened the 18 inch wide by 24 inch tall door to crawl in he always hops down and dances at me, and I always grab him and pull him onto my lap and put my head down in the middle of his back and then start petting him and talking softly to him.

Putting my head down in the middle of his back helps to hold him until he calms down and keeps my face away from his flapping wings. Also he can feel the fibrations from my voice. Rusty is not a little bird. I think he weighs around 9 pounds or so.

I noticed today that most chickens that you pick up tend to have a shakiness from being nervous. Rusty was very calm. He dances a bit on my leg at first but then calms down and accepts my petting. He has to do his male thing and I understand and try not to hurt him in any way.

I noticed today that his spurs are about 1½ to 2 inches in length. Boy oh boy, I'm glad that he is a calm an manageable bird. I really don't want to take them off so he can protect the girls when I eventually get them together.

I also noticed that his waddles have improved since the frost bite incident where I put water in a bowl when the water can froze and he got them wet. I cannot tell that they were ever frostbit. Whew. I am glad. He has that deep Mahogany coloring of a RIR but has black striping around each feather. I really like the way he looks.

Oh and Mojo... He is a mutt. NH roo x Black Giant hens. His sisters are Star(board) and Port.

My big black Jersey roo weighs over 9 pounds now and is less than a year old. I have another black jersey with some red ticking on his hackles the same age and he only weighs 7½ pounds. I haven't had a chance to weigh Rusty but I think he weighs somewhere in between. Rusty's feathers are really nice and shiny. But he is about a year older than the other roos. ( perhaps because I pet Rusty more? )

Edited to change Rusty's Parentage.

yeah, that's what I was envisioning - the half barrels. I could find room in my house for it - if I can find room for hatching and brooders and cages for chickens, I can find room for one little tree.

If you had a big enough pot I imagine ya could, but the pot (if I moved it) would probably have to be lifted onto a skid and moved with the tractor

Or have it on wheels and move it that way, maybe - I'm thinkign for a tree you'd still need a good 3 or 4 foot diameter pot.

I didn't think about how I would move the tree once it's potted.

Maybe that isn't such a great idea.

Having a citrus tree in the house would be so pretty! But our house is too small, and my stupid herd of cats would try to use the pot as a litter box...I learned that the hard way when trying to have an indoor window box of herbs.

You know, I don't think I have ever eaten a pomegranate? But I figured if I didn't like them I could always take the fruit and sell it

Plus, being a fruit tree would mean it would have flowers, and I love flowering trees!! Plus maybe Cris would like them?

Too bad I can't get the mods to change my tagline to
"Loves Mutts" or something silly like that - at least it would warn people not to get snooty

I told my husband about that thread last night, and he asked me "are these thoroughbred chickens these folks have ? Do they have registration papers?"

gotta love the guy.

I once had a 5 foot tall norfolk island pine (yeah, the thing was OLD) and my kid brought home this cat that used it as a litter box and ended up killing it.

stoop!d cat

eta - Oh, and the cat I have now, when she was younger ate an entire Aloe plant!! I thought she'd die, but apparently they aren't poisonous, just slicked her up good on the inside, I suppose

they taste just like pomegranite juice - but each little fleshy thing has a seed inside it. Alton Brown says to just eat the seeds, too - but I usually spit them out. They aren't easy to eat, but they are good, and healthy, too.

They're sort of tart

I havve always thought that the seeds of a pomegranate were the part that you are supposed to eat? And I have never had pomegranate juice either.

If you are worried about cats using your pots for a litter box, just cover the top of the pot with wire or something. An herb garden would be good, cause the plants could grow right through it, a tree would have to be cut around.
