I think we're postponing until later in the fall when it cools off a bit. I think that's what I heard last

It's been so hot and muggy, it'd be much more comfortable if we wait a little to have it.

...I think semi-retirement/retirement is harder than working!! Sometimes I am stressed from not knowing if I am coming or going!!!

Talk about not remembering..some days it is scary!!..

tell me about it, I work harder since I am retired than I ever did punching a time clock. But at least it's work I love and I'm doing it for me and not for someone else.

I ordered a "extras" assortment - hatchery choice of whatever they have leftover from orders that day. It could be a mix of anything, figuring it is probably roo heavy, but last time I got at least 1/3 pullets out of the deal. I am hoping this time of year to get a few more pullets in the mix - I believe orders have slowed down a bit, even for the bigger name hatcheries.

The price is just $29.95 for 100 + 10 extra chicks - plus shipping, total price to me was 44.55 this time (was a dollar or so more last time, so maybe they are overrun with extras and took a little off?)

They are all dual purpose heavy breed chicks, BA, BR, white rock, possible cornish cross (didn't get those last time, thankfully), RIR, somethign they call a buff red (red sexlink probably), black sexlink, something called a giant black (that isn't a jersey giant, so no idea here, either), and I think one other possible....

Last time I got mostly white rocks and red sexlinks - I also had about 10 black australorps and about 20 barred rocks.

I figure for that price I'll just raise them up a bit, sort out the girls, sell the roos cheaper, and restock the brooder coop. It averages out to less than 50 cents per chick, so I make decent money on them.

Plus, a lot of folks around here will buy the white rocks for meat - instead of the cornish cross that die so easily in the heat.

I've learned a bit this year so far on selling and such, so when I ordered before I was stupid enough to let someone talk me into selling them a lot of the barred rock chicks right off for only 60 cents per chick - that isn't gonna happen again

However, at the time I also had over 180 chicks in my hatching room in the house

so I was looking to get rid of some of them right away.

now looking at 180 chicks in my house doesn't phase me as much

I'll keep the BR, thankyouverymuch, and you can have the white rock babies for a buck each, if you're lucky.

What hatchery is it? I just might have to check out that assortment package myself.

It's Reich's Poultry. They don't have a website, but the toll free number is...
1-866-365-0367 chicks available Feb. through Nov.

The "Heavy Breed Special" reads...

"Each week we have chicks leftover. We sell them at a huge discount to our old customers. You get Big Red, Barred Rocks, White Rocks, Buff Reds, Cornish X, and huge Silver Laced Black Giants that weigh up to 16 pounds. Our Choice of pullets, cockerels, or straight run mixed together as available. Supply is limited. Order Today. "

100 + 10 free $29.95
50 + 5 free $18.95
25+ 2 free $12.95

shipping is by state and size of order. Shipping for KY at 100 chicks is supposed to be $20.85 but I haven't ever paid that much. I think this last spring the shipping was only about 17 bucks.

Like I said earlier, I ordered the 110 chicks, and my total was 44.55 so I got a discount on something somewhere in there, cause it doesn't add up to their numbers.

I think they are more of a Wholesale Hatchery than a public type hatchery (like MM or Cackle, or Ideal) and that is why they are cheaper and why they don't have the huge variety the others have. Mostly Reichs has dual purpose or egg layer breeds - nothing fancy. They do have guineas and turkeys, though.

They'll send you a flier with their birds and prices if you make an order.

I really need a net for catching birds! We got to play 'chase the chukars' yesterday, I was putting a dust pan in their cage, and two of them got out of the cage and flew right out the window!!

We chased one around the yard, and it ended up flying back inside the building where I was able to catch it. The other one was not so easy. I must have fought with that one for an hour at least, before it finally hopped inside the pigeons' pen (has a piece of fencing with 2"x2" squares on it). So then it was easy to catch that one. I'm thinking I might pinion them, but I'm not sure it that is such a good idea for birds that are cannibalistic anyway. I definitely need to clip their wings though!

Finding one around here is the problem. Our local walmart doesn't carry them anymore, I suppose I could maybe get one on walmart.com and have it sent here, if I can find one on there. I'm just glad that I caught the little boogers, I only have 4!! But I have found someone that has some young ones for $5 each, so if I ever get my money I will most likely be getting more.

Cortni and Layne did good in their swim meet today against Russell Springs... The coach said Layne is continuously improving on paying attention and focus. We're really proud of both of them...
