LOL I offered mine catfood once, they looked at me like I'd lost my mind.

Hope the feet straighten out. They would be pretty, I think. Can't wait to see them. I think there is something you can do for scrunched feet, I read about it somewhere on here. - do a search for curled toes in chicks or something like that.

Oh, btw - someone else answered my other posts - and he actually eats his Plymouth Rocks

Got a good answer from him on them - I did ask another Q on it, so I hope he comes back to answer (was about time to butcher - he does his at 18-22 weeks, seems like a long time to wait, I was afraid they'd be tough.)

I ought to go to bed, been funky all day - gonna rain tomorrow I think, and I have to go out to Burkesville with hubby. Would rather stay home in bed and read a book.

Peace -
Meri

Is it supposed to rain this weekend? I had heard it was gonna be cold, but not about rain. That would suck. I am not taking my birds anywhere near any other birds, so they don't get sick in case I have to bring them back home. If it's raining I probably just won't go. I wouldn't let them sit in the rain. I'll have to check before I make too many plans!!

<edit>I just checked the forecast on yahoo weather, and it is supposed to rain tomorrow
barnie.gif
Maybe I'll get lucky and it will rain in the morning or overnight.

I would rather go there than have to go all the way to Liberty. I plan on taking the leftovers to Liberty anyway, but I was hoping I wouldn't have any!!
I'm gonna take some of my red pyle boys there as well. I will miss them, but they are really turning into gang bangers. Usually about 4 or 5 of them try to jump a hen with no roo around. Poor Gertie has taken a liking to Charlie, and he is low man on the totem pole, so they chase her and him all over. They aren't scared of Charlie one bit.

So what do you think about Emma for my hen? It fits right?

Just checked the weather channel web site...looks like it's supposed to rain all day...great :thun

It sure is cold this morning !! The sky is reasonably clear, though. The forecast has changed a few times this week - they had rain from thursday through to monday, but then they changed it to friday and saturday only, I haven't checked recently it probably changed again. It's windy, so I'm assuming we got some rain coming soon.

I ended up staying up to watch a movie with hubby until nearly 4 A.M.!! I'm amazed he didn't have to push me out of bed this morning to go do chores.

Emma is a great name. I had a distant "cousin" (or two - my GG Grandfather's sister and his Aunt) named Emma.

Speaking of old dead people - I'm still bothered by the whole Plymouth Rock thread.

I know, I obsess sometimes....

The old dead people part came up this morning in a PM I got from someone who was telling me not to be bothered by all the doom-sayers when I mentioned wanting to try PRs for meat. I realized that a big part of why I want to do this is just Me
smile.png
I am (as I mentioned) the family genealogist, and I am very much into history, etc... so I figure if the PR was The dual purpose bird of choice for so long, then why can't it still be a good bird now?

Yes, we can breed for super meat, or faster growers, or bigger breasts but what are we acomplishing by doing so, other than getting bigger breasts and faster meat?

Ok, that wasn't very clear -

It's like Monsanto. They have super seeds that are disease resistant, bug resistant - and you can't save them from year to year because they are either sterile or they won't grow true to form. In effect - we are dependant upon Monsanto (and whatever they choose to do with our seeds) to go back and buy every year from them to get a crop.

Now, Cornish Crosses are genetically bred - not modified as such, but it is effectively the same thing. The public is used to the Cornish Cross, they like the big breasts and fast growing bird - so that is what they buy. But - they have to keep going back to the hatchery to buy them.

What happens if for some reason someday the world goes to crap and these folks can't get their super chickens? (post office and/or hatcheries close down for some national emergency, natural disaster, whatever... or maybe the "bird flu" makes the Govt. close down all hatcheries - it could happen) Are they going to give up chicken meat for lack of a Cornish Cross?

I don't want to be sucked into dependancy on hatcheries to obtain my chickens - especially my meat chickens.

I'm not a doom-sayer, LOL really. But sheesh, the economy is in bad enough shape, and who knows what will happen when the election rolls around this year. I just want to be as self sufficient as possible for me and mine. If that means no super chicken, then that's fine with me. I want to be ready with an alternative before it all goes down, ya know what I mean?

I come from a long line of stubborn independant minded folks.
I intend to continue the tradition

4 A.M.???
ep.gif
And I thought I stayed up late!!

I am not familiar with the cornish x's, but I was wondering why you wouldn't be able to raise your own? I understand why you don't want them, but I was just curious.

I have a prospective buyer for partridges next year!! My dad's neighbor stopped by. He trains bird dogs, and he was on his way to go pick up some bobwhites to hunt. He said if I dod get some, and had them in a flight pen, that he would for sure buy some off me!! Now all I have to do is wait for dad to figure out what he is doing. I would like to get chukars, but I don't want to get my hopes up. Dad's land problem is still up in the air. He said if I had bobwhites, he would buy those as well. I would need a permit for either of these birds, but if I sold enough it would be worth it. Heck, I probably need one for the birds I already have! Then they (dad and neighbor) started talking about pheasants, but I don't want to get into all that.

I was about to freeze my butt off!! I had to do laundry, since it's supposed to rain, and we don't have a dryer. I had to come inside and get my jacket on!

I don't think it was any colder today than it was the last few days. Not sure though, I didn't go out to feed as early as I usually do. Kinda planned on going back to bed, but I have a lot of homework to do, so I've been on here most of the day!!

Oh well, I'll get it done eventually. Trying to find out info on my silkies. Dad thought I was gonna take them to the sale as well! Cristian would never forgive me if I got rid of those. He calls them 'his' feather chickens. So cute! And when I told dad I was not going to sell them, he said oh good. So I guess that means he likes them too!

Meri--how far is it from my house to yours? Dad wants to check out your breeder coop. I was trying to explain to him how you have yours, and what I want to do with one (not sure if I want a coop or tractors yet), but he is stubborn, and won't listen. We'll have to come over one day, once we figure out what is going on with his place. Won't do any good to get ideas if he loses it.

Shelley, I put two Millie eggs in the bator yesterday just for you. Hope they develope well like the ones I'm putting in the hatcher tomorrow night. Meris eggs are due Monday...These ones look to be thriving much better than the last 3 eggs I pulled this week. Then out of the large bunch I recieved through mail, I may have 6-7 looking good in those, looks like the PO was pretty rough on them.

Have a great day, Cindy

The parents birds are also chosen for specific traits, so the ones you could buy (Cornish roo and a Rock Hen) would not be like the ones they use to breed the super chickens. You could do regular hatchery (or breeder) cornish and plymouth - but it still wouldn't be quite the same. Plus I think Cornish (not the cornish cross) chickens are ugly. The cornish crosses get so big so fast they have health issues and just do not live long - plus their size makes breeding hard, egg laying in less and the product you come out with would not be true to type.

Plus, Cornish Crosses are just plain nasty birds.

Coolness

Yeah, I think I feel so cold because I have a little bit of a bug. My head has been stuffed up for three days now, and I just feel "ick" not "sick sick", just plain ick.

I've been doing some more research on meat birds (dual purpose) and I am thinking it wold be cool to have Plymouth hens crossed with Orpington roo. Someone suggested that and I checked it out - the Orpington gets a larger breast, is somewhat early maturing, and the Plymouth Rock is early maturing with a medium sized breast.

I'd love to have you guys come out and see my place. I am about 12 miles the other side of town, though

Probably total from your place it is about 22 miles.

If you go out towards 61 South, you'll get to my place.
I can PM ya with directions if you want.

I do have pics of the coops up on my webpage on BYC - the newer (breeding) coop is under "New Coop" (page three, I think). But if ya talk him into coming out here, then you can see all my chickens and donkeys, too, LOL.

Let me know if ya want to come on over, and I'll PM ya with directions.

edited because I can't spell today

Peace -

I talked to my mailman today, told him I was expecting some hatching eggs tomorrow (hopefully) or the next day.

He said "good luck with those"

- he knows how hard the post office is on stuff.

I hope they come to me ok.

Aww!! That's great!

The p.o. really sucks with the handling of eggs. Most of my quail eggs were scrambled. I don't think I will order any more. I am gonna just try to find someone locally that has some of the birds. I might have found some of the A&M's, but it seems like my button is gonna be a lone ranger.

I''ll be waiting for those babies!! Oh, and I think I will sell you my dutch hen, if you want her. I was trying to figure out how to seperate my chickens into breeders, but I don't like the chicks' colors that I get from her and the splash roo. B&W chicks, the ones I get from them, are pretty, but they don't look 'right' you know?

Let me know if you want her. I was thinking like $15, but you can come check her out and let me know what you think. I'll try to get a pic, but she is pretty skittish.
