I missed this last night, I'm sorry about the babies, Shelley.

They were so new and so tiny, I guess it was just too much trauma for them.

Yeah when I got up this morning, the chick that couldn't open it's eyes, was still alive, but barely. I tried to get it to drink, but it wouldn't. Shortly after, it died too. Poor little darlings!! Like I said in the last post, I will never again give chicks to a hen that didn't hatch them herself.

On a lighter note, Cris still has not come up with a name for the baby pig. I told him I'm gonna call it Fred, if he didn't figure it out.

I was gonna take a pic of it, but it was buried under the straw in its cage...maybe later I can...

I got an incubator today

Now I can't wait to check it out and try it on some eggs.

We went to TSC (had to anyway) so I got it there, which was cool, because at TSC I'm tax exempt. I thought about getting a live trap, too - they got the two trap deal (a small and a medium for 32 bucks) but I figured I'd wait on that.

Got to help hubby with the corral today, though. and Take Jon to work, and then get jeans for Sam, sheesh, men sure do make it hard to sit and play with the chickens, don't they?

Peace -

You should come and get some eggs from us, $2 a dozen, to try your bator out. These would all be large breed chickens, but you could take them to the sale at day olds, and get $1-$2 a piece for them. Or keep them to fill your freezer with!! Good luck!!

One of my OEGB pullets started crowing last night...

I sure hope the other one isn't a roo as well. I'm just glad I didn't get that rooster the guy had that looked like them, then I would really be ticked!!

OK, now for my newest edition....

Cris just got the "Horton hears a Who" book by Dr. Suess today, so he has decided to call his little pot-bellied piglet 'Horton'. That's better than what he had said before. I think it was 'Squeely', or 'Squeeler', something like that.

With no further ado... Hears Horton!!!

Hey, I've been lurking on this thread awhile.

Most of you all seem to be in the western half of the state...I live in Lexington. I have three Welsummer chicks (4 weeks old) that have turned into roosters. I can't keep them in the city. Anyone want to trade chicks? I need something to trade because I have one buff orp cross pullet who will be alone once the roos go! I can't drive very far with my toddler in tow, but I could meet somewhere like Frankfort, Danville, or Lawrenceburg. Any takers?

(I'll cross post on the other KY thread if I can find it, since some different people closer to home post on there...)

I might do that. My hens must like the new lattice I put over the door - every one of them laid their egg in the nestbox today. First time in a long time I've had 6 out of 6 lay properly, LOL. I think they feel safer with it covering the doorway, and just a little path for them to fit in (and not the donkeys

).

Hey - can you tell the dif between the wyandotte and the reds eggs? I'd like some slw eggs to try. I might keep some of those, if I had em hatch out. My lone slw hasn't laid an egg yet, so I have no idea even what color eggs they lay.

I know the RIR's lay brown eggs, and I believe the SLW lay the lighter/white eggs. But they are all mixed together, so chances are they would be mixed. IDK, though, cause the chicks that Bertha has are from dad's birds, and there are 2 for sure that look pure, and probably the other dark one as well. But yeah, I can figure it out, and they'd be at least half SLW. Just let me know when you want to come get some, and how many you want, so dad doesn't wash them. He usually gets around 24-30 a day, so there would be no probs getting fresh ones!!

(P.S.-you can tell what color eggs by what color their ears are!!
RED=BROWN EGGS.....WHITE=LIGHT/WHITE EGGS works on almost all breeds, with a few exceptions)

<edit> Dad has about as many SLW roos as hens, so I'm sure he would part with one if ya want a roo for your girl!! He was talking today about which roos he's gonna butcher, and I know at least one SLW was on the list!!

Hi,

I'm close, in Wilmore. I'd love to trade you for the Welsumer Roos. Right now I have 1 week old RIR pullets. I have a couple of Naked Neck Pullets also. I have others, but not able to tell if they are girls or not. These are from Ideal Poultry, hatched Oct. 1st. I also set a Bator full of my mixed flock eggs, which will hatch out in 19 days. (I HOPE). If this hatch goes well, I'm going to buy two dozen of Bev's Marans eggs someday, I am on the list. I have no idea how long it takes, hoping not too long. If those interest you, let me know.
