Kentucky people

Yeah Shelley has some pretty babies...She posted some pics a few pages back.

BTW Shelley will you save me a few females of the blue/splash Dutches? I can visit you and buy them when I go pick up my BTWJ roo from Meri...My BTB Dutch might be able to have his own harem that way. I'll bring you whatever Millie eggs I get for that week too, the ones in the bator are veining, although I believe I had one from these first 3 eggs due tomorrow to quit developing for some reason don't know why, looks to have stopped somewhere between days 7 & 14. Now the three due next Monday are filling the eggs and moving all over. I guess they stay fertile all year right? Do roos lose any fertility over the cold months?

Or you could always come and get some of mine!! I have WAY too many babies!!

Where do you live exactly? LOL, and what kinds do you have regularly?

I think I may have gotten all of her lighter blue splashes, but I got 5 of them, so I could probably part with two. (Unless she has some that I hadn't seen in that mix - there were a LOT of chicks running around in there, LOL.)

If Shelley doesn't have any lighter blues left, two of mine can be yours

Shelley - I see people post in two different areas on craigslist all the time. I think the area you want would be Bowling Green, but Lexington and Louisville would be good places to post, too. I've seen people near us post in the Bowling Green heading (campbellesville, greensburg, and one from edmonton) under Farm and Garden (for the chickens). Unfortunately they don't have any "South Central" or anything nearer to us - guess we're just too small

BTW - does anyone know what happened to the Kentucky Farm Shopper? I used to love to look in there, and I haven't seen a hard copy one since last fall - and the online site hasn't been updated since April or May.

Peace -
Meri

Sorry Cindy! Looks like you'll have to sweet talk Meri for those! She cleaned me out! I only have one blue splash left, and it is still young, looks like it might be a pullet, but I don't know!

I have heard that they do loose some fertility in the winter, but I don't know for sure. Every egg I have set in my bator in the past few weeks has been fertile.

I don't know if they do lose fertility. Mine sure don't seem like it!! I had eggs 3 times in a row that did the same as yours though. It was only a total of 5 chicken eggs and 1 guinea egg, but I thought I was messing up, then my last hatch had 11 go in the bator, and 9 come out! so I guess it was just something with the eggs?

I know!! They at least need to have a Somerset listing! I think we are closer to Louisville than Bowling Green. Not sure though, it's about 1&1/2 hours to Louisville. Seems about the same to Bowling Green.
I haven't heard of that shopper. here's a link to a site like craigslist, but for farm stuff...

pop57 gave me this link a vew posts back, I posted eggs and chicks on it!! I have a friend that is gonna loan me a bator, probably indefinitely. She has a cabinet, and doesn't use the styrobators

So I'm gonna try to make some money hatching OTHER peoples birds for a change!! Well, it would probably still be mine or dad's eggs, but still, someone else's birds!
I figured $10 for the hatch, upfront, plus $.50 a bird at pickup. That way, I won't get stuck with a lot of extra mouths to feed, and no more $$!
I think I'm gonna take my birds to that consignment auction next weekend, if I can't sell any this way. I bought a 50# bag of feed not even a week ago, and it is half empty already. Plus I feed a 1# coffee can of scratch twice a day! Dad needs to catch his 'big' chicks that are running around the yard, I'm getting sick of feeding them!

Hey Cindy, that little B&W chick you liked is from my black dutch hen, and the splash roo. I have 7 or 8 more of her eggs to set too. I might be willing to part with my black hen as well, if you are interested.

<edit> I have 4 more of her chicks in the brooder, but I'm not sure which ones exactly. They are all B&W, or will be dark blue splash. Not light ones like the ones Meri got. But like I said, I still have 1 light blue splash in the brooder, that's about 2 weeks old, though not sure what sex. I am not 100% sure my roo is pure bred though.

Someday I'll have one of those cabinet bators

I'll just have to get by with this one for now.

Ya know, if ya want to get rid of any of your styro bators..... give me a holler

Can you believe I lost ANOTHER chicken today??? I lost one of my BTW jap babies the other day, turned out it was a cockerel, I had 2 so not too bad. Of course, it was the pretty one! Same day lost my OEGB crele cockerel, and now today, I lost one of my OEGB cockerels, that I thought was a pullet, til it started to crow! I mean, really, I don't want all these roos, but I would like to get SOMETHING for them, other than hawk food!! This makes the 2nd one out of the silkie/jap tractor, so they are grounded till further notice!! That is all I need, to loose another BTW jap, I am down to a pair. Plus, Cris would be heartbroken if one of the silkies disappeared. He calls them 'his' feather chickens...so cute!

I have read on here somewhere that you can put garden string (think that's what they called it) on the tree limbs, and the hawks won't go under it, but these guys have gotten brave, and go into the horse pasture. No trees there!

Anybody have pics or specs of breeder pens they use? I only need enough room for 2-4 birds each cage. Would they be better on the ground, or raised up? I can't build a coop, wouldn't do me much good anyway. They would still all intermix.
