I only have 1 right now, and she is gonna loan me hers. I had the chance to buy one of those cabinet bators like hers, holds like 300 eggs, for $300 a month ago. Didn't have the $$ for it!! I would be in trouble if I had that capacity!!

I'm gonna throw some of my own eggs in the bator, too, when I set them, since I'll have room without the bantam cochins.

I already grabbed three today to set - one each from my australorps, and one from I don't know who.

I figure I may as well, try some that I drove to pick up, some shipped and some from my own farm to see which ones hatch best.

I have the bator going now, been trying to tweek it today. Right now it is sitting at 100-101 degrees and 39-42 humidity - is that good? or are my temps too high/low, and the humidity too high/low. I have the (accurite) thermometer laying flat on the screen, btw.

I know I can read the directions, LOL but I want input from you guys.

I can't wait til those eggs get here in the mail so I can start incubating!!

Peace -
Meri

The temp is fine. Mine was always around 100, and my eggs still hatched early. The humidity might need to go up some, unless you want to try it dry. I think 45% is the 'right' way to do it. Mine has been running right around 40%. I think it matters most what the humidity is when they hatch. As long as it is 35%, I would say that is ok.
The directions I got with mine said 99.5, nothing about higher for still air, and lower for forced air. I don't let mine get too high. Like I said, I always have mine hatch 2-3 days early, with or without the fan.
Did you get a fan for yours yet?

<edit> Mine would bounce between 98 and 102 before I got the fan, and it worked just fine.

I got a three cell breeder pen at the auction when I got all those oegb. it is about 4.5 - 5 foot long (fits across the back of my pickup truck bed) and about (guessing, here) 24 inches deep. It would fit two bantams in each cell ok - for breeding purposes. Too small for long term, though.

I've only used it to transport - haven't used it for breeding - I was thinking it would work good for breeding quail in, that's why I got it. Also for transporting bantams (or one big bird each cell) to auctions and the swaps. Of course, if just transporting, it would fit two to three bigger birds per cell - but that would be cramping them.

My neighbor just got a trio of bantams (oegb) for his kids - he built a raised cage for them, 5 foot long, two foot deep, two foot high. Has a pail in it for a nest. That would probably work for breeding, too.

Do they still have it?

Coolness - I have at least three days to get it right before setting eggs in there. The humidity was higher, but I pulled the plugs on top out. Then I had to put one back over it halfway to try to make it set right.

I dont have the fan yet - but Jon said he probably has a fan I can get to put into it. Hubby said he'd hook it up if Jon gave me one. Now I just have to keep reminding Jon to look for one - I'll ask him tomorrow, he has the day off work, so he'll have time to search for one.

I'm gonna go to bed - I'm awfully tired tonight for some reason. Been sort of dumpy/spacey all day - hope I'm not coming down with something - that's all I need

I was thinking about 3x3 for the 'run' part of it, and an enclosed 'coop' on the end, but not sure how big for that. I want to make them all connected, but seperated by wire, so I could nave a space heater or heat lamp in the 'coop' parts. Any ideas how big of a 'coop' 2-4 birds would need? I have an elaborate plan in my head, just be fun trying to hatch it out!

Yeah I leave the plugs out of mine as well. One reason is because I have staggered hatches, the other is because I figured out it was easier to up the humidity if you don't have to fight the open vents too. I would have to put a small bowl with sponges in it in the bottom, as well as having all the little things in the bottom full, to get my humidity to go up. Now that I have the fan, I have to add a very little bit every 2-3 days. I think it's because of no air circulation? Maybe the hygrometer just wasn't getting a good enough reading?

Yeah that would be great Shelley...I don't mind that they aren't full splash look, I just titled it that way because I knew the daddy was splash...I still like that little black n white one if you aren't keeping it. And if you do decide to part with the mama I'll take her too.
