Ok Meri, here is my breeder/brooder coop design. I will need a 3 cell duck house and a guinea house first, with another something for the mixed hens that I am too attached to! (Emma and Gertie)

What do you think?

LOL Oreo followed me up the steps this morning and practically into the house. She wanted her treats, and I was ignoring her, I guess. I turned to see if the dogs wanted in and there's this chicken right behind me, looking at me like, "why did ya stop?"

Hope you find your guineas. I had a perfect chance to catch all of mine thursday evening, to take them to sano on friday, but I knew I wouldn't have the chance to go to sano, so I didn't bother catching them. I might keep a pair of them, but the other three can go. Maybe two won't be so bad as a whole gang of them.

I'm not totally awake yet. My head feels sort of woosey, ya know what I mean?
Of course, it could be the cigarette - I'm trying to cut down... getting a head rush from my cig, maybe,

So, I got a flashlight to candle eggs yesterday - how soon before I can really tell if they are scrambled or not? It's only been about a week, and I think I read I have to wait 10 days, but what does a scrambled egg look like? and can ya tell by looking through the shell if it got scrambled?

Oh, Shelley, have you seen that "Ghost Adventures" show? I think it's on Travel Channel or something - this guy reallly sucks. He is totally unprofessional, totally disrespectful, and I have no idea how he got a show. I think because that other show with TAPS is so popular, every other channel has rushed to get their own ghost hunter show, and they are mostly pretty lame.

The guy on Ghost Adventures swears in every sentence, they are constantly bleeping him. He "taunts" the ghosts into showing themselves - even "ghosts" that are supposedly not causing a problem. He went to this one mansion and he was supposed to see if these two male ghosts were there, and he was just plain rude. If I were the family who owned the house, I would have kicked him out. Idiot shouldn't talk to someone's ancestors like that.

Then they had one last night (first time I'd seen it) called Ghost Moms. From what I could tell they really didn't find anything (or if they did, they didn't show it). Lame, just really lame. Looked like it might be good, too, before I actually watched it. It is about two women who do the ghost hunting thing at night, have their kids to deal with during the day, etc.... They have a 7 member team. Part of the footage was just them dozing off in this house in the dark - just sitting around, falling asleep. Wow, now that's "must see TV" -- not.
Don't these shows have EDITORS? Did they just need to fill space because they didn't really find anything? ok, if ya don't find anything don't do the stoopid show.

I was so bored with regular TV, that I turned it to TBN

and watched the evangelicals trash the pagans for an hour, then they went on to some show where this guy was following folks around to see miracles. The one on miracles was nice - the one trashing the pagans was a bit paranoid sounding, if ya ask me.

For instance, this kid was on there (he was a teen) talking about how when he was younger, like 7 or 8 years old, he tried to kill his family because he was reading Goosbumps books ::snicker::

The kid's dad was on there, too, telling about how the kid would chase his sisters around with butcher knives. Until he (the dad) burned the Goosebumps books, then everything was okily dokily.

They had an ex-Wiccan on there, who actually wasn't bad. She at least made some sense as to why she had turned pagan in the first place, and why she got out (she attributed a lot of it to her own psychological stuff, which is generally the main reason that anyone goes in for any religion that promises power.) She at least didn't go over the top with the drama, she just said that she found more satisfaction and peace in Christ, which is cool - ya got to be happy, or why bother.

Well, it was good for a giggle, anyway.

Not sure if we're gonna do the pig auction this monday or not, since we have to get the hay equipment, we might wait until next week or later in the month. We need the hay equipment, but I really want pigs, too

guess I'll have to learn some patience.

I ought to be cleaning house. We may have friends coming down from Michigan in the next week or two. Knowing Jake, he'll just show up at our door without notice,

I hate cleaning house.

I do want to do some baking, though, and I don't like to sit around and bake unless the house is all clean - I feel guilty,

like I ought to be doing something more important than playing in the kitchen.

I'm about ready to get rid of those dang oegb.

They are pretty, and I like them - but I have not had ONE egg in a month, now. Yeah, it's colder, yeah the daylight isn't as long (they have lights in the coop and a heat lamp to get under if they choose). Not one egg. period.

I got these things to breed - so I can get babies to sell or trade.
Everyone around me told me that bantams (especially oegb) are popular, and folks like to trade them.

I might keep a trio or two, but I have a lot of oegb that aren't doing diddly squat and I'm ready to make room for other birds who will produce for me.

I'll keep Stevie Ray and his two girls, and Little Man and three of his girls, but I'm wondering if I should just get rid of the others.

The little blues I got from Shelley, I'll keep three of those, too, and maybe a roo for them to breed with, but the rest can go.

Anyone close by want some bantams? I'll take pics and post them.

Shelley, I'll keep the two girls you wanted, until you're ready to get them.

I'm suddenly in a bad mood today. Gonna get off and go talk to the chickens....

As far as the runs go, I'm not sure on the actual size. The ones on the sides would only be 6'wide, but the ones on the ends could go out as far as I need. They are pretty much limitless. I think the two smaller cages on the top by the doors will turn into breeder cages too, and I could put some kind of a ramp going down into the run (seperate, of course). I might make the runs like a circle, all the way around the building, that would be neat! Dad would think it was silly, I'm sure, but who cares.

I have 5 different breeds all ready that are mine, plus with the silkies I have 2 different colors, so I don't know about those. I shouldn't have gotten that other rooster, the black one. I don't know what I'm gonna do with it. Maybe put him in with my mixed hens, and let him take care of them

I had thought about breeding him to Gertie anyway, since she is part silkie and has black skin and 5 toes. We'll see.
I will have to do something with the runs, to make sure Baby can't get in if she gets loose. I might just turn her loose during the day, if the runs are strong enough to keep her out. I hate having her tied up.

I only have one baby guinea now. I don't know where they were roosting at last night, but evidently it wasn't a good idea. The one that is still here looks like it has a mark on its leg. Has some loose feathers and stuff. I thought I heard the others calling this morning, but when I went to look I had two dogs and a kid following me, so I couldn't hear a thing. Maybe they'll turn up, but I doubt it. I wonder if the person I got these off of would still have any lavender? She might not let me have any if I tell her what happened to these. Not like i have the money for them right now anyway.

That stupid beagle of mine is gonna go bye-bye if I catch her chasing my chickens again. Dad saw her the other day, and told her 'you're gonna get tied up!' I told him 'No, she is MY dog, if she keeps chasing them, she is going somewhere else!!!' He acts like just because she is a beagle he has any right to her. She got put in a time out this morning. She had run all the chickens and the guineas out of the woods, so I grabbed her and put her in the dog cage for a while. I'll keep trying that to see if it will work.

Wait until day 14 before you throw any of your eggs out. You can tell when you get them if they are scrambled, because the air sac will move around. But it's ok to leave them in there as long as there aren't any stinkers.

My game is due to hatch today, but dad said she was off the nest this morning, and the eggs hadn't done anything. I think her eggs are deformed. The ones I had in the bator before that I showed you were hers, and 2 hatched. One of those chicks died. I have 3 in the hatcher now tha aren't doing anything. So I wonder if it is just something about her eggs.

Your OEGB's stay in the coop right? They don't free range? If they do they are probably hiding the eggs. It could also be because of the new chicks stressing them out. Some chickens are just touchy about things.

I still haven't figured out why that chicken loves him so much - he ignores her. She follows him around like a puppy dog.

Rudy and Nana are all snuggled up tonight for bed - it's cute. I'm glad Nana has a nice roo to keep her company, someone who will take care of her, she's just too sweet to be manhandled - err.. roosterhandled.

Gonna be a busy weekend and early next week. Got the mower today, got to get the rake and baler tuesday, hubby said he's still going to get mne pigs monday, got to vote tuesday, got to get the corral done in between (only got maybe two hours more work to do on it though).

And all I want to do is hide in the house and read.

Well the remaining guinea keet is smart enough to roost in the barn with the rest of the birds finally. I can't believe something got those other two? I am thinking they wandered off too far, or maybe the stupid pup was chasing them and scared them away. I haven't lost any animals at night since early this summer when my red pyle hen was taken off the nest. Only lose mine during the day, from dogs and hawks. Plus I know they wouldn't have roosted on the ground somewhere. The first night they were out they roosted in the barn on the lower roost. Dad was thinking they might have went under the wood that is by the pigeons? He said Midget was barking at something under there earlier this morning. But they wouldn't do that. I still have no idea where they would have been last night. I looked everywhere. I am definitely building some coops before I get anymore birds. But at least Horton has a buddy. The lonely little keet hangs out with him all day. And he only tries to bite it once in a while, but he aggravates the crud out of the little bantie hen that is too scared to show to anyone. She likes to hang out there with her babies, and Horton tries to bite her tail. I told Cris he wanted to have chicken for dinner!

Hey, sorry to burst into your party

but I have a question--

Have any of you all purchased birds from a big man named David in the Berea/Richmond area? He regularly goes to chicken shows too, with his son or grandson named Tyler. There's a big thread about this in the diseases section, but to make a long story short myself and two others purchased quite a few birds from him only to now find out (after a necropsy) that they have Infectious Corzya AND Avian Lyphoid Leukosis. He denies it, but there is no question that these illnesses came from his flock since his birds were the only ones I purchased from a farm. One of the young pullets died with huge tumors.

So please watch out for him! He posts on the Lexington Craigslist. We've posted a warning there but he keeps flagging it for removal.

(Lotzahenz--if you read this, don't worry! The Welsummer roos I traded you were isolated in my brooder, I was careful not to cross contaminate.)

Hey Cindy,

I forgot to tell you that I have at least 1 if not 2 or 3 little chicks that look just like that one that turned out to be a boy. Chances are there's one girl out of the mix!! I'll keep you posted! I still have one little blue splash chick, the one in the pic from before, that still looks like a pullet!!

I had someone sell me some with snotty noses (I found out after a couple of days at my house) earlier this summer, but he lives near me. I got all of that taken care of - wasn't anything too serious, thankfully.

It seems like a LOT of people (from all over) are posting about getting birds that are sick lately - makes me wonder what is going around. Also makes me want to never bring another strange bird into my flock. I finally have some good chickens, I want to keep them. (although I have a few that still have to go, for the most part, I'm happy with the my layers).

I have an incubator, now, though, so I can hatch my own eggs out - less chance of disease. I don't think (don't know, but don't think) there are very many diseases that pass through the eggs.

On another note, - I have two appenzeller spitzhaubens (not true to type, but funny and pretty) roosters for sale - to anyone that wants one. I'll get some good pics of them tomrorow.

I'm keeping one and gonna get a couple of pullets next spring for him.

I need to write up a list of the birds I have for sale or trade....

If anyone has a spitz pullet they want to trade for a roo - let me know

. These roos (actually cockerels) just started crowing, aren't a year old yet - they were born this last spring.

Gonna be busy tonight - I have to get Jon from work, then I have to take Roger to Glasgow (at 9:30 at night!!) to get his wife's car - she broke her wrist at work.
