I am in the process of building my coop out of old fencing. There us a space between each boards about quarter inch. Should I wrap the outside to keep it from being too drafty? I would worry more in the winter.

I have 6 australorp chicks. I think they are 4 weeks old. What do you have?

Well, let's see... Swedish Flower Hens, Black Copper Marans (and a splash roo), Ameraucanas (black, wheaten/blue wheaten and lavender), Isbars, rhodebars, American White Bresse, olive eggers, Easter eggers, a couple of Barred Rock hens, and some lavender Marans project birds (that I will be selling). I also have a couple of blue Orpington pullets that are sold and some Icelandic hens that will all be going to new homes this weekend to make room for new projects. I think that about covers it for the moment.

I am in Louisville also! just starting my flock too. quail are going in the incubator soon and maybe some chickens soon.

You could leave it as is through the summer, but I would definitely wrap it before cold weather sets in. If you can also add some insulation when you close it up that would be good too, for both warmth in the winter and keeping it cooler in summer.

Just make sure you don't make it too tight. Chickens need good ventilation. They can handle the cold very well, but lack of ventilation can cause lots of problems.

What an awful and funny story!! best of luck this time around. I have lost a few and it was very discouraging for me as well.

About the ventilation -- is cracks in the walls and under the eaves sufficient? My wonderful husband just started building a coop and I am not sure if we definitely need windows or if the cracks will do. They only sleep in there, we free range them on 100 acres.

For anyone that might be interested the tractor supply in Louisa,Ky is going to start having small animal swaps on the first Saturday of the month. Starting next month in May....
