Mojo Chick'n :

so, shelley, are ya gonna order any ducks?

I was thinking if ya had extras I may buy some of em off ya

I don't know, I don't really know where I would put that many right now. I think I might just wait and see what I have in the babies first. I have 4 cayugas and 3 rouen ducklings, so I should be getting some girls from the mix! The rouen babies are supposed to be all girls, so we'll see. I honestly don't know where I would put that many babies till I could tell what sex they are!!

How are your babies doing?

Ms. Lewis Rich :

AW I love the runners they remind me of Daffy duck, don't ya guys think they are kool?

The runners are funny looking to me! I like the big fat pekins myself, but I think the cayugas are turning into my favs. I like ducks period.

I am thinking of downsizing to only one breed though, so I don't have to seperate them for pure eggs. Right now I have 3 different types.

I had thought about runners, but I'm holding off on those, I haven't ever seen any in person.

But, I'm getting 20 blue swedish for nearly the same price I would have paid for 8 of them at the feedstore in March. So if I can even sell a few, it'll help pay for the ones I am keeping.

With shipping and the 1.60 per duckling it is only gonna cost me 43 bucks for 20 ducklings. Nifty, eh ?

I just hope they'll get along with the call ducks. I imagine if I intro them when the blues are still young it'll be easier.

I can't wait - I've been making a TSC list, guess I need to get out there tomorrow or Monday, so I am ready for them when they get here. I want to try that bedding that Shelley suggested on another thread, too.

the quail ?

they love the big cage, this morning I turned on their light and they all sort of jumped up and down a little (like morning excercise, but not so high they hit their heads, just bouncing a little) and then they plowed into the food. They are so cute

They shouldn't bonk their heads too much, they are really tamed. Cris loves to hold them and play with them! It's just the sudden change from dark to light that throws them off. If you have a dimmer you could use that to slowly turn their light on, then they probably wouldn't jump at all. They are probably surprised that they can see out of it, they were in a box here! Dad got me a heat light bulb yesterday, so I can put mine outside in the cage i made for them. That should be interesting. I still need to rearrange chickens, then figure out where I'm gonna put the quails' cage at. And they definitely love their food!! Oh, I was told they grow till they are 12 weeks old. They are about 4 right now. So they should be pretty big, since they are already the size of the pharoahs I have in the building.

They do seem pretty tame, I figured quail would run from me, but I can stick my fingers in the cage and they just look at them, don't run (dont come up to me either, but they don't freak out at least).

Meri I saw the Runners at the Ohio Nationals, they are really neat. I am not a duck person but I could be swayed with those. I couldn't stop looking at them like I said kept thinking Daffy Duck.
I would love to hatch the barnyard special just for fun is that a deal is it usually more?

with quail it is best to incubate their eggs, right? I don't imagine the caged ones will sit on eggs.

I really need to get that other incubator, maybe when I go to TSC I'll grab one. (at TSC I can get it tax free, rather than at Day & Day I have to pay tax - not much difference in cost, but every little bit helps.)

Do you think the ducklings would be ok in the play pen? or should I put them into something with more solid sides to it?

They have a barnyard special, but is for chicks/ducks/turkeys, maybe geese, too. Not eggs, but live critters. I looked at it this morning, but I can't recall what the price was.

I wanted the blue swedish because they are a medium sized duck, not too big, and they are good for both meat and eggs, and they are supposed to be reasonably calm, and not prone to flying away very often. Plus, you get blue-black-splash out of a hatching of them, so I'd have variety but still have one breed of duck.

Meri your going to be in a world of Poo

lau.gif
I know, but I'm not keeping all of them - still there will be poo. However, I do have 25 acres, so I got room to let them roam a bit - even though those call ducks hang out in the chicken coop all day
lau.gif
I had to take the water out of the coop, and make them come out to drink and play in it outside, so they wouldn't mess up the coop.

In reality, they'll have closer to about 4 or 5 acres of actual roaming area, the rest is hayfield, and they probably won't go that far out.

I plan to try to keep it to having 4 of them (maybe 5) but if I fall in love, it'll be hard choosing which ones to keep and which to let go.
