Major bummers at the Dennison Farm tonight....

We were sitting in the living room, watching TV, and heard the donkeys going off out in the field. If it had been just TeaCake I probably would have ignored it, since he goes off at almost nothing. But it was Michelle, Mama and Butters and Nibs... so we went to investigate.

Now, Michelle and Maggie were both pregnant, and Michelle has had full teats for three days... and Maggie hasn't had and is not as far along as Michelle is.... but Michelle didn't have her baby tonight, Maggie did - way too early. It looked fully formed, except it's hooves were still not totally right, so I'm thinking it was probably 80% of the way to being full term. It was a beautiful pure black little male.

He was still warm by the time we got out there, but not out of the sack at all, and not moving, so I tore the sack and tried to give mouth to mouth (or mouth to baby donkey face, I guess) and it didn't help. Pushed his lungs and they sounded wet and full of water, so he didn't even have those emptied of fluids yet.

Good news is that she appeared to have passed everything, and got up, peed and walked over to join her buddies. Maggie appears to be ok, after it all, so that is good. Too bad about the baby, though, he was so pretty.

I believe he was a stillborn, and that could be why he was born early - probably died in the womb before labor even started. I doubt he could have lived being born so early and probably didn't have a chance to begin with. This is her first time having a baby, so hopefully next time will go ok for her.

So, keep poor Maggie in your thoughts, so she recovers ok and doesn't get an infection (I'll be keeping a close eye on her). I may have to call Jr. Walker tomorrow, and have him come have a look at her.

Sorry about the baby Meri...Poor thing

Maggie seems to be doing ok this morning. She even got a little snotty with me for being late with her breakfast

I wasn't late - they just think they should be fed before anyone else.

I'm still bummed, but I suppose if I had to lose one, then a male would be better to lose than a female. Not much a bright side, but it's something, I guess.

He hadn't any light points at all, though - pure black, he would have been very pretty and probably would have sold well, too.

I was so looking forward to seeing babies running around out there. Now I have to wait on Michelle, and she could have hers at any time.

On a different note....

Ethel has learned to climb stairs, and she taught Fred and Lucy, also.
They all came up on my porch yesterday and pooped all over (had to hose it off

).

I don't know why they would come up there, unless it's just to hang out with us (they do that a lot) because they don't really eat treats of any kind. Or at least I haven't found any that they'll eat yet.

I was sitting on the deck doing paperwork when Ethel came up, followed closely by Fred, then Lucy took her time getting there (she's a bit slower than Fred and Ethel - or maybe she's just more cautious).

Ethel walked past me and almost right into the house, til I told her No!!

silly goose. Fred and Lucy hung back a little - they aren't as sure of my adoration as Ethel is - she is a bit spoiled, I admit. Not overly so, I still make her mind, but she does get away with more than most other poultry around here, just because she's so funny and sociable.

Happily, all of my ducks and geese are pretty sociable. The mallards love to hang out where we're working, and of course, the geese have to come over to supervise anything we do. Joe and DD usually go off on their own into the pasture, but the whites hang out with the mallards, now, so they hang with us, too. The baby rouens don't follow, usually, cause they're younger and on the bottom of the totem pole, so they hang with themselves closer to the pool and pen. That's ok, though, too, cause the rouens are gonna go to auction, one day, and I don't want to get too attached to them.

Those mallards are so funny - whenever we do anything out there, they come over to check it out, usually getting in the way. If you tell them to move and shoo them off, they go a little ways, then come right back. My male is getting his drake colors, and one other looks like it might be getting drake colors,

I was hoping I had one male and three girls - I know I have two girls, though, so I guess we'll just see how it turns out after their moult.

I do have to say, though, the rouens are pretty smart little babies, too. They put themselves into the pen the first night they were out, and are always the first to go in, and straight into the doghouse they sleep in, so I can put a cage in front of it for them. Not to keep them in but to keep the geese out - the geese like to intimidate them - they don't hurt them, just stand there and honk at them from outside the doghouse. Naughty geese

I thought the hooves didn't get really hard until after being born so that the baby wouldn't tear up the mother inside from kicking. Sorry to hear you lost him.

That is true, they don't get really hard, but these were not even formed totally - they had inner tissue sticking out the bottom of the outer tissue (hard to explain, but you know how their hooves are dark, they white tissues inside hung out the bottom of the dark part - like the dark part hadn't formed over the white yet.)

Reasons why Kentucky is better than Michigan....

Reason Number 32#...

In Michigan, if you want to buy a handgun, you go to the police station, fill out an "intent to purchase" form - you then have ten days to purchase said handgun.
You take your "intent to purchase" form to the gun store, buy the gun (after filling out much paperwork there, also), then take the handgun back to the police station to have it inspected and fill out more paperwork. (If this is your first gun purchase, you often have a waiting period between wanting the gun and getting permission to buy the gun while they do background checks on you.)

In Kentucky - you go to the store, fill out a little paper with name, and vital statistics, tell them that no, you are not a convicted felon
wink.png
they call it in, and hand you your new handgun and a box of ammo to carry out the door without so much as a bag to hide it in

I love Kentucky

I am wondering if I can claim my new Russian Makarov 9mm as "predator control" on my farm tax form

I'm so sorry. It's horrible to lose your babies like that. My mare had the prettiest little baby stillborn last winter. I cried for days. I hope you next ones go better

FYI my fellow kentuckin's just in case anyone , as I have been looking for certified organic feed for your birds , sheep etc. Found a new store today in Lexington. http://www.evoorganic.com/ nice folks to deal with and they are having a open house this weekend. They sale organic gardening supplies as well as the feed. The feed they carry is http://www.mcgearyorganics.com/ out of Pa.
Hope this helps someone out.

Okay, the nail hadn't formed over the frog then. I don't need a picture. I wonder if she was around any trees that had those funky catepillars on them and ingested them. They found that the bugs carried some sort of bacteria that caused fetal still birth and abortions in mares that ate them with the leaves and grass around those trees.

Someone dumped a pup on us, and this one is BIG!!! For those of you who have seen Baby (my GSD mix), this pup is probably twice as big as she was at the same age!! I think he is about 8-10 weeks old...no puppy breath, but he is not very coordinated. So far it's a toss-up between pyrinese and st. bernard, leaning more towards pyrinese. He is as big as dad's male beagle that runs around the yard, and that dog is 7 months old at least!

Here he is next to Jug, dad's beagle pup.

PICT0519.jpg

Any guesses?

Really? I had a golden retriever before, and this one doesn't look like it to me. I don't remember my GR having webbed feet either, but I'll check. I already checked for extra dewclaws, thinking it might be pyrinese, but he doesn't have that either.

Picture is really fuzzy, here, and discolored, I may be better able to tell in person.

btw, Shelley? How long does it take those quail eggs to hatch, cause it's day 18 and still nothing
sad.png
My temps have gone slightly low a couple of times (no lower than 97), so I figured adding an extra day or two... but I thought they hatched usually around day 16 or so.

Seems odd that none of them would have hatched or had action, I would think that at least one or two would TRY
lau.gif
Must be something I'm doing wrong.

none of them stink yet, so I'll leave them a little longer.

Oh, check out pics of Anatolian Shepherds. If it's an Anatol, I'd have to talk hubby into letting me take him off your hands
wink.png
I would LOVE to have an anatolian shepherd!!
