Meri, does that mean you are getting rid of Feathers? If so, I'd prefer to come and get him back (even if it upsets the neighbors). I love that little guy and hate to think he might end up being eaten. Just let me know!

yes, unfortunately, I have to get rid of him also. I'd be glad to hang onto him for you for whenever you can make the trip - he isn't causing a problem, or anything. (except he is always stealing my cigarette when I am in the run and smoking

)

I figured if you didn't want him back I would find a good home for him - free - as long as someone gave him a nice place with "some womens to hang with". I didn't really plan on getting rid of any of them just yet, but anytime you want to come by, you are welcome to.

I was thinking to wait until the pullets are all laying (hopefully in another month or so)

I had considered letting Mr. Speckles go for free, to the right person. I just don't want either of them to end up as dinner, I'd keep them if that were the case. They are both such wonderful roos, they need to have girlies and breed more babies. If I have to charge an outrageous price to make sure someone really wants him, I could put a high price on him, too. I guess that would be better than free - a free roo is more likely to become dinner than a high dollar roo.

Hubby is already waffling on Mr. Speckles - he likes him and hates to get rid of him - I asked if he planned to build me a coop just for Mr. Speckles - he didn't answer that one

I hate to get rid of either of them, but economically, I'm better off limiting my breeders and my different types of chickens.

The only reason I'm keeping the three cochins is because I can put them into the brooder coop and they'll get along with any babies I toss in there. Otherwise, I wouldn't have a coop for them, either.

I feel really badly about Feathers - since you drove all that way to give him to me so he had a good home. If you cannot take him back, I promise he'll have a good home, if it takes me a year to find one for him. But, of course, you are always welcome to come get him if you prefer.

Meri, you know how the chickens live free at the Casada's... And even though Bill has electric wire running up the ramp to deter pred.s, there is a small chance of a daytime pred. but they do live their lives out roaming happy and free where they want to go and they are given a treat of pizza crusts at least twice a week. They have a loft coop with several perches in it, and they also have the holly tree and fruit trees to sleep in. You could send the boys with some of their girls... If you want to you could drive out here so I can take you over there and see what you think.

There's an option

If I can't find Mr. Speckles a home close by so I can check in on him now and then, I will consider that option.

Hubby is waffling about getting rid of him, now. I told him he simply has to go, much as I hate to let him go, also. I'm trying to be responsible. I can't keep every chicken just because I like them

I decided to not do the Light Brahmas because ALL of the brahmas I got from Cackle are now gone, also. All the hens I'd have for Feathers are the ones I have now - and they aren't laying for crap, and two keep thinking they are broody (when they don't set consistantly, but they don't lay either - so basically worthless in the egg laying/hatching game.) Feathers is the only brahma I have worth keeping right now and without hens, I don't need a roo.

(btw - I have lost EVERY single chick I ordered from Cackle this year - I'll never buy from them again).

Hubby adores the orps
lau.gif
he said last night that he likes that he can go into the coop and just reach down and pet them. They are sweethearts

Hubby also likes the BR because they sell well and lay great - so eggs and sales both there. He agrees that I need to downsize, he just can't bring himself to let me get rid of anything!!!

He makes me crazy sometimes
lau.gif

Well, his "permission" or not, I am gonna downsize and do what I need to do with the flocks. The only way he's gonna stop it is if he runs out there to build me three more chicken coops before the end of August. I don't see that happening

Just let me know...
BTW, Are you going to Sano tomorrow if it isn't raining? The meet for ages 10 and under tomorrow is at 2:45 our time in Russell Springs... I am just going to that to help out and for support. Plus I have one of the easy ups they'll need to use for the team. Afterward I was going to bring your cage to you at Sano if you're gonna be there.

Yep, if it isn't pouring rain, I have to take a couple of ducks to Joe for Cristy. I may try taking those two game roos to the auction, too.

If it rains however, I'll be going the following friday (first friday of the month is always good for sales

They sell really well in spring and summer, it is slowing down a bit now on sales, but the first friday of the month everyone has their monthly checks, so sales are great then, usually.

The actual chicken part of the auction starts around 6. In order to put your birds through the auction, all you need is your DL. You take that to the office to get your buyer/seller number and you're good to go. But people get there as early as 2 pm and set up in the driveway. There's no charge for that.
People are real cheap at Sano, though, they want you to give them everything.

Woohoo! Hubby and I went a couple miles down the road and bought a black austrolorp hen, 2 EEs and a leghorn. I should have my egg colors covered now, unless you guys are holding out on me and there's another kind of chicken that I NEED.
fl.gif
I also got what the gentleman selling them called an austrolorp roo, but he's white?? I dunno.

The poor girls were in with too many roos and their backs look kinda bad right now...can you put anything on there to help them heal?

If it's white, it's not an austrolorp. The full name of them is black austrolorp, I think there are some working on blues, but that hasn't happened just yet.

Do you have any marans?? You need one of those, either that or welsummers. They lay super dark, chocolate-looking eggs. That would complete your basket
