Kentucky people

Well, I've converted the masses - or at least my neighbor.

He was talking about buying some quail (processed) off me for his campign weekend (with his wife and a coupel other couples) but he's been waffling - not sure how many he'd need, etc...

So, he is here helping us put the deck in and I went out and processed a couple and grilled them up for him.

he's not waffling anymore, asked me how much if he advertises for me (how much to tell other folks, because he's getting the "good neighbor" deal)

I need to hatch more quail, I think

I may just have to put in a coop just for quail.....

I haven't posted in a very long time, thought I'd share some bird related news though. The short story is we lost one of the hens and two ducks. I caught the coon soon after in a live trap. After I let my coon hound get a good smell of him, he took a little trip to the pond in the trap. I really wanted it as painless as possible and that seemed like the best way to go. I hated losing a hen and those blue swede ducks were beautiful, it was a real tragedy. Hopefully we won't be seeing another for awhile.

HI There, long time!!!!! Have you checked out the Central Ky Chickenstock Shelley is hosting? You could head straight down 127 almost to Russell Springs... She is fairly easy to find. ESP, if you have a GPS

Ok, in between deck work, I set up another breeder cage of quail. 5 hens and a roo - all wild color. I did swap out the white female and male in the other breeder cage for a wild female and a golden male.

so, now I have about 12 hens and 3 roos for breeders. I may throw in one more hen to the other cage, though. Depends on how many I have to process. I could do another bunch of them for breeders, if I needed it, but I figure with 12 hens, I ought to get around 10 eggs per day, ought to be enough for hatching. I don't want to get too many eggs so that I can't hatch them all. I don't eat them, so I'd just be tossing them out (unless someone bought eggs, and I haven't advertised that, so I don't know.)

let's see, I can fit 120 eggs per incubator (only have one set up for quail) and if I do eggs every four days, that's 40 eggs (aprox.) per hatch - so I can put 3 hatches into one incubator. Then just remember which ones are which so I can put them into the hatcher at the right time

30 babies fit ok into one of those bins, so if I get a 30 hatch out of 40 eggs (about average) then I'll be good.

sounds like a plan

Bummer on your ducks - I haven't lost any ducks in awhile - last one was my blue hen to a hawk. (keeping my fingers crossed for no more lost)

I got rid of all of my blue swedes, the drake kept trying to mate my poor little call duck girls

. All I have are call ducks, now (and geese).

Ok Meri if BC hasn't laid tan eggs with brown specks like this one(tried to get a clear shot sry) then it has to be someone else starting... Course I won't know for sure til I get two eggs in a day.

I'm sorry to hear that! We really grew attached to the Swedes, they look so different than most ducks you see. If anymore popped up around here, I'd be all over them.

I've never had either breed, but could it be the austrolorp's? Was it as-big-as BC's eggs usually are?

Shelley: I think Cleo is looking for a safe spot to lay... She seemed to be acting really strange today when I let them out. First she flew up on the gate and looked at the roof like she was thinking of flying up on it... Then she flew down and ran around the side and when another chicken headed that way she run her off and went back around for a few seconds, then she went to the hatch but didn't go in just looked in. Then she calmed down and started to eat. I have a feeling when she starts to lay I'll be having to look for my white eggs...
