I have two gals who have gone broody on me and I have finally locked them into a cage with food and water. If I don't do this, the other gals will climb in over them and lay a fresh egg which gets mixed into the bunch. Or worse, when the hen gets off the nest to poop, drink and eat, then another hen climbs in to lay an egg and the broody hen goes over to another nest with eggs and starts setting anew on fresh eggs. Without marking them you cannot tell a fresh egg from a long time broody egg. Really don't want one of those plopping out into my skillet.

I have no idea how many eggs are under each gal. Just that they are setting. Maybe 21 days from Wednesday or so. The thing about this type of incubator is that if you try to peek at the eggs, you get punished (pecked). I need to start culling some of my hens, so I mark the ones who have gone broody and keep them, regardless. Hopefully in a few generations I will get a large percent of broody hens.

Okay so for those of you who know that I said that I wasn't going to hatch out any this year so that I could reduce my flock, well "I" am not hatching out or brooding any eggs... However, I cannot speak for my girls.

Sorry Kygal ... I found out yesterday that my dad has a brain tumor and I wasnt on here at all. I have 5 living chicks one of the twins died shortly after hatch. The other is doing great except a bit small and they are so NOT Faverolles. Well 3 are salmon faverolles but two are Jersey Giants! I dont mind, the kids wanted some black chickens ! lol (not sure if they are blacks or blues though) The Hatchery offered to send more eggs to hatch but with my dad in the state he is in I dont want to be bound to the bater right now and like I said I dont mind the giants. I had to help the twins and another one that had a pourus shell. They ( other that one twin) are doing great! They are so nosey and they are running all over the place. I am happy with them. !!

Oh my! I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad! I'll keep him in my prayers.

Glad that your hatch went well. It was too bad about the twins, it would have been awesome for them both to live!

TY prayers are always appreciated. We are still not sure what is going on with dad so I am trying to not get to freaked until all facts are in. I was sad about twin too but we had another one that had troubles with a porus shell.. I thought I waited to long to help becasue it would not help itself out of the shell after i pipped it for him ... then (he pipped air cell but struggled hard on the shell with no results) Then i pipped a bit more for him and wrapped in a moist paper towel. he was just laying around peeping once in a while... waited several hours befor pipping some more.. still wouldnt help himself. then i all but separted him from membrane and he still wouldnt try to lift his head or anything. The rest were dry and fluffy so put them in the brooder so he wasnt getting trampled left and right. Finally he started trying to kick the shell off and lifting his head slightly. membrane conecting him to the shell was dry so i went ahead and clipped him loose of it. He gained more strength and he is now just like the rest of the chicks and running all over and acting a chicky crazy lol. He is hanging with his sudo siblings doing great!

Kygal... I am starting to see the wing feathers on my Favs but not enough to tell if I have all roos or what and I have no idea how to tell with the jersey giants... I guess I will just have to be patient! They are cute little fuzzballs. I love to watch them they are silly. Smallest one thinks its tuff guy. ha ha

Is anyone interested in combining a gosling order with me? I was thinking of using either Metzer Farms or Ideal Hatchery. Ideal is cheaper, but Metzer has a much bigger selection. I lost my only goose to a dog today, leaving me with 2 ganders and 1 unknown (probably gander). I would be interested in buying some female embden geese or goslings as well, if anyone has any
