Kentucky people

Hey Ya'll

Thought I'd give a shout to the Kentuckians on the board! I currently live in NC, but was born and raised in northern KY. I lived on a farm in Falmouth (Pendleton County) and moved to the "city" - Campbell County (Dayton - near Newport/Bellevue) in high school. My parents still live in KY - They bought a farm in Brooksville (Bracken County) not too far from Maysville.

I would LOVE to move back and live the country life again, but my husband is leery - due to the lack of a good job market. Oh well, I guess I can't complain too much since my husband is currently in the process of building me a chicken coop!!

Hello all. Just wanting to let everyone know I have Buff Orp chicks from just a couple days old up to about a month and a half old for sale. Also I have silkies that range the same age as well. They are Blue and Splach mainly. I have a couple Whites and Blacks as well.

Who is going to Tim and Susie's hen house this month? ladrifter and I are supposed to be there on the 18th, we would love to meet other BYC people! I think labo might make an appearance as well

ladrifter will be bringing some seramas, I'll have mostly mixes but might bring my BCMs. Still haven't decided if I want to keep these or not. I'm thinking I do, unless I can get what I want for them

I will also have 2 mille fluer d'uccles cockerels, about 10 weeks old?? I have 4 grown roosters and only 9 hens (5 of these are under 4 months old), so I really don't need any more boys

I will also have some silkie/cochin bantam mixes, they are very cute. I have 3 'grown' (not laying) ones, a white pullet and 2 black/red cockerels, then I have 2 white babies and 3 black babies. The older 2 boys are black except for red on their hackles and saddles.

And I'll probably bring some blue and black OEGB, I'm sure I've got more than I need! I might have a group (1 roo, 3 pullets) of white-splash as well, haven't decided if I'm keeping those, but probably not.

I'm looking for a polish hen (any color), a naked-neck hen (showgirl or turken or mixed as long as it is naked-necked), and that's pretty much it

Unless someone has some parlor roller pigeons??

But probably not

ETA: Probably should have put this on the traders thread, so I guess I'll cross-post (shhh, don't tell

Hi all, been a while since I dropped in. My barred rock pullet has successfully hatched a healthy chick. A very determined broody, I finally let her have 5 to set. Four disappeared (eaten?) and now we have a little lemon colored fuzzy butt. Also a friend gave me a couple partridge colored modern games, with pretty gold colored head and neck and eye stripes. Is that color sex linked, as in are these likely to be hens?

I would like to report a situation where I'm not sure if I am lucky or not. Kind of one of those mixed blessings things. I moved and reduced my flock to accomodate and wanted to further reduce my numbers as time and circumstances occasioned, so I did not plug in my incubator this year.

I Don't know what has happened, it could be just something in the water, I'm not sure but out of the 18 hens that I have about 9 of them only lay once every few days because they are about two years old. Out of the other 9 hens, one hatched out a couple of chicks about 5 weeks ago and has now left the survivor on its own. Two other hens have hatched out 5 more chicks at about one week old, and I have two more hens that are sitting hard on clutches right now, due in about one and two weeks.

In the past I kind of liked having a broody every now and then for the romantic down home aspects of keeping a flock, but this is getting a bit out of hand. One has to continually seperate the broody from the flock so that new eggs are not added to her clutch even as the chicks are hatching out. Then the question of "is this a new egg or a dead chick?" So far I have been juggling things with only a few dozen eggs being thrown away. Nests for egg laying are now down to the two least desirable nests. (hen's opinion by way of numbers of eggs laid in them under normal curmstances)

I'll keep you informed.

Well we did it again! I found a someone that had some Welsumer pullets to sell. Eva and I picked up the last three they had. They had been in a pen with about 35 others (straight run) and the roos hormones were starting to kick in. The numbers were not in favor of the pullets they had in there. They realized what was happening and got the pullets out but not before some pretty rough treatment so we've got our new girls seperated until the ome month time is up and we can doctor up the wounds. I post the whole thing again but if any of you want to take the time I posted on the Emergencies/Injuries & Illness thread some more info and some questions. We know the rehab will take some time and effort but we have Welsumers now.
