Kentucky people

Jen we sell them for 2.00 a dozen in Etown...in Leitchfield we didn't do very well they sold between 1-2 dollars a dozen.

Whimsy: Thanks for the response... I sell mine for 2.00 a dozen. I've never went up to the Leitchfield thing. I just have a sign out and people stop in. I also make a once a month trip up to Louisville and sell to a few people I know that pre order them, I raised that price to 2.50 and no complaints.

The manager at the TSC in Georgetown actually told me that it is a requirement of the state of KY.

Something to do with the fact that chickens are not considered pets but livestock . . . ? Not sure if this is actually so but that is what he said anyway.

It's not a state law, my local feed store will let you buy 1 chick or 100.

Boy I hate to jump in here but as a director for animal control in Hardin County, I can tell you that selling a min. of 6 chicks is a state law...we have had to go to a few feed stores and explain it to them...but only if we have gotten a complaint about it. The law was passed to stop the Carnival people from passing out chicks one at time as prizes...anyway here you go:

KRS 436.600 Dyeing or selling dyed baby fowl or rabbits.
No person shall sell, exchange, offer to sell or exchange, display, or possess living baby chicks, ducklings, or other fowl or rabbits which have been dyed or colored; nor dye or color any baby chicks, ducklings, or other fowl or rabbits; nor sell, exchange, offer to sell or exchange or to give away baby chicks, ducklings, or other fowl or rabbits, under two(2) months of age in any quantity less than six (6), except that any rabbit weighing three (3) pounds or more may be sold at an age of six (6) weeks. Any person who violates this section shall be fined not less than $100 nor more than $500.

THANK YOU ! I was the one that posed that question~ a friend of mine was @ TSC considering buying 3 baby chicks & they told her it was a KY State Law to not sell less than 6. I knew about the dyed ones as we use to get them every Easter, when I was a LOT YOUNGER, but they never dyed the ducks. BYC is a wonderful forum.

Ok on the dye thing, how much dye is an issue. I had marked a couple in the past with a dot of food color on the back since I had a few too many who looked exactly alike. It was getting confusing when I was trying to check each of them over. So they ran around with dots on them for a while. Is that sort of thing ok. Not like anyone would ever see them but just to make sure. I did not even know there was a law against that.

Leitchfield turned out t be a good day for selling hens today. Five were sold within 2 minutes of arriving and the other three within the hour. Egg sales were slow and I think would have been better if we had been on the other side of the road at first. We couldn't decide which side to set up on.

The best part of the day was coming home with 10 Black Copper Maran chicks, with feathered legs

Heather my sweet, I do not think you are old enough to have seen the dyed easter chicks and bunnies. They were pink and blue, green completely colored !!!!!!! It has been a long time since that has been done.

this law is really not enforced.....we had someone that got on a kick about it 10 years ago with TSC, we ended up having to go out to TSC in Etown and talk with the manager..he informed TSC corp headquarters....so the whole TSC will only sell 6 chicks or more is probably my fault...sorry.

Jerry..in my humble opinion it is a great law. Not everyone wants or knows how to take care of animals. In this case chickens, They are adorable when small and what child wouldn't want to find one Easter morning. But they then grow to be CHICKENS and some don't think as cute. So they get turned loose to fend for themselves or worse.

I know you see how cruel people can be to animals every day. Having to purchase 6 may deter someone from a impulse purchase of a chick.
