your 3 white ones with the yellow down? may be males.

I'm curious why this statement was made. I'm not doubting the statement, but just wondering .... How in the world do you sex chicks at an early age???

I'd love to learn how to sex a chick early on in case I ever buy live young ones. I hatched 5 chicks 2 weeks ago and still waiting to figure out what they are. Using a wing feathering method, I have identified 2 roos, 3 hens. But I may be wrong. Then I saw something about tail feathers if and if I use that technique, one of my original hens is now a roo!

Because they are most likely sex-links. If they are, the white ones would be boys. Black sex-link males would have a head spot like a barred rock, red sex-link males are white.

ETA: Most chicks cannot be feather-sexed, so don't be surprised if you are totally wrong on your babies

It was more for fun in trying to see if we're right at this early stage

I kind of hope I am wrong! One that I am pretty sure is a roo, I wish it wasn't! It's a Splash Orpington. He's going to be gorgeous if it is a he. Right now, he is pretty aggressive towards the 4 Marans. I'm hoping for one Marans roo. Hopefully no more than 2 in this lot of 5, though!! That's my hope, anyways!!

I'm pretty new to this chicken stuff. Are sex-link birds a particular breed? Are most birds sex-link with the spots and stuff?

spydertoys: Congratulations on your new baby... bet its so sweet lookin

I've gotten 7 duck eggs since last Monday... still cant find where my one duck hen has her hidden nest, shes not sittin on it during the day yet, but I guess sleeps on it at night. Is that what they do til they collect enough eggs to set on then go broody? It is drivin me nuts that I dont know where shes going in the evenings.

I wish I could help you on the duck questions but I can't figure mine out! She's a cayuga mix. She's laid about 30 eggs now! She had about 15 at one time plus some hen eggs and started laying somewhere else. I combined the collections and she did 2 things - 1) kicked out 7 eggs and 2) started laying in the original location. UGH! So, thinking she was rejecting the 7, I ditched them into the pasture. I never saw any indication since about the 3rd egg laid that she was going to sit on the eggs at all. So again, she got a collection of 12 eggs + 8 hen eggs. I've since taken them all in and put them in the incubator. She is still laying eggs! I can't turn her off! The hen seems to be taking a break, but that's ok. She's pretty bedraggled and a mess. She's missing feathers all over her. I'm suspecting from the rooster, possibly the drake. When the duck started laying, the drake started getting pretty possessive of his girl. I feel bad for the hen - she seems so laid back and never bothers anyone!!!

Jen4: Thanks!

I have asked around on what breed those three are and some people have said that they resemble a tetra tint, leghorn, and amberlink. I'm hoping their not a red sex link rooster but I can never be sure with them this young.

Hello! I read somewhere (and can't for the life of me find the posting now) that there's an upcoming poultry show in Shelbyville?? Does anyone know the date for this show and the location?? Or have a link?? Thanks!
