That is pretty gross. I'm not full-fledged, but I lean vegetarian anyway, and I'm not sure I would want to eat something that looked like those black carcasses. The shot with the head still on is particularly icky.

I do have one question though....since Silkies are bantams, how old do they need to get before you butcher them? At a meeting of our local chicken group the topic of raising chickens for meat came up. Since bantams are so small, would you have to wait a long time? Do they dress out at say "Cornish hen" size?

They look pretty dark, do they lighten up in color? The adults from Hinkjc are much lighter.
I have three babies Lavs, just wondering. Also could explain a split Lav. I am new to the chickens and really need an education Thanks:)

They are lavender. There are different shades of lavender, but basically it is a uniform gray color without any appearance of black. Also, the picture itself looks kind of dark.

Example: Lavender ameraucana

Split in this case means that the bird 'looks' black but carries lavender since it is a recessive color.

Okay, thanks! Since its probably a rooster I'm going to try to trade it for a silkie pullet, when it starts crowing so I'll know for sure.

You can tell by the shape of the crest. I would say with 95% certainty that it is a rooster, but I 'could' be wrong...it's been known to happen

This is my splash rooster, he has the same shape crest. When your's gets a little older you should notice the streamers coming in on the back of his head, they are just feathers that grow longer than the others.

You can kind of see the streamers on the side of this white silkie's crest.

Thanks that helps a lot! Someone told me that Self-blue is the same thing as lavender? Is that true?

They have completely different genetics and throw different colors in D'uccles (unless I suck at research worse than I thought). Though I am not good enough to tell the difference just by looking. I honestly wonder if anyone can.

I have lav orpingtons from 2 different sources - with the intent to breed together. The ones I got from a lady in Campbellsville are this dark color. The ones I got from a hinkjc line are lighter. I like the lighter color better, but her adults were still very gorgeous birds. From what I read, it seems all the lav crosses are going to be black.

Thanks for the info! I am learning little by little.
