My first chicken was a ex battery hen who came through work to be put to sleep because she was unwell and not accepted by the other hens. My co-worker (fellow Vet Nurse) couldnt do it so took her in and asked if I would take her cause I had mentioned I'd like to have chooks one day. She called her Mable and I kept the name. So over the next week I got a little coop set up for her and took her home. Mable looked terrible as she going through a moult and also had been pecked badly. She was awesome. I loved watching her walk on and peck at the grass for the first time and then how she would talk and hang out with me in the garden. She would pop inside too sometimes. How had I never had chickens before? Shes so cool and loves cuddles. After a month or so you could hardly recognize her with her new beautiful brown feathers, she now looked like a proper chicken :)
Couple of months later it was time to give Mable some buddies so I bought two 10 week old pullets and named them Gladys and Eunice.
Mable was very interested in the babies and would run straight to their cage in the morning to see them. Didnt take long bwfore all the ginger fluffy butts were happily pecking around the garden together. They are always together. Gladys is the most adventurous and leads the other two into trouble (always under the fence to the neighbours) Mable recently didnt make it back home for a couple nights, stuck in the neighbours coop. Gladys must've been too quick that day.
They love mealworms and come running/flying - what is that manoeuvre called? Like they run so fast and flap but cant quite fly property 😂 its pretty funny.
So fast forward one year and we have moved and I adopted another two ex battery hens nearly two months ago. They are called Phoenix and Fransziska (my son named them after game characters)
The original three were not very keen on letting the new straggly looking hens into their bubble. There is progress every day. The gang of three have accepted Phoenix ok but still chase the smaller Fran a bit. The newbies are still sleeping in a different coop.
So I have five chooks, all brown shavers. I love having them about and their personalities. Plus their eggs are amazing, no more buying eggs.
The cats and dogs give them space cause who wants their eyes pecked out?

Thanks for letting me join the page, I've learned alot on here already. 😃🐤
