We went ahead and took out the last of the eggs out of the incubator. They were dark and appeared to be full of chick, but never managed to pip. We didn't have the heart to open them to see why.

Okay, here is Joey, aka the Trader Joe's chick, as of today.

He is very outgoing and demands attention, and very healthy. I may go to the feed store and get him a buddy since the chicks we ordered from Welp won't be here until the 13th. We tried an mirror, but he acted kind of neurotic. The tiny stuffed chripping Easter chick seems okay. He does cuddle up to it when he is tired.

i am just using a regular mini flashlight when you candle are you cadling from top or bottom as cadling from top is better as th elight goes through the air sack and spreads out so you can see better, just make sure you are in a dark room and no extra light is shining on the egg including light from the flashlight

Hey, he is beautiful!

He would probably grow up to be a great daddy... get him some beautiful little girls!!

Awesome!

Thanks for the link, I will candle in a couple days to see how its going, but that is a bummer about the whole food eggs. I hope some of my 2 dozen I bought are viable but I guess it sounds like there is a chance they arent.

My Trader Joes are doing well and growing, due to hatch next week, I cant wait your baby is adorable!

I am having so much fun incubating and telling people(non-chicken ones) that I am hatching eggs from the grocery store, LOL!!!

Anyone have a thought about which Trader Joes have fresher eggs? The youngest I've found were 6 days & nothing on those - I pulled them out this am after 5 days - totally clear.

The original dozen I got were 3 days, the ones they had the other day when I was there were 11 days old. Maybe you can ask what day their eggs come in.

Whole foods were also 10 days and when I asked if they had any new ones in they checked and while they did not they did let me know if I call in ahead of time(a couple days) they could special order me fresh ones.

Unfortunately, if he really does turn into a roo we can't keep him. In our city we can have up to 20 hens, but it is illegal to keep roosters. He won't get to keep any girlfriends here for very long.
