Kids Trader Joe's eggs hatched! - Update on Joey on post #147

We looked up how the packing code is formatted. We learned how to read the codes before going shopping for the eggs. The first 3 numbers are the day of the year of packing. i.e. 008 = January 8th, 035 = February 4th, 365 = December 31. The other date of the code is the use by date.

Here are some pics of our cartons' pack codes. Our 3 day old box: 008 was January 8, 09

Then here is our 12 day old box: 366 was Dec. 31, 08

This has been a fun story to follow... thanks for all the updates.
I'm hoping that some of his eggmates

hatch soon and give Joey a little company. Are any of the other eggs pipping?

Thanks for the link, Mahorni. I've never heard of this breed of bird.

Thanks for answering my question robbdogr. I am definitely going to try this. I have a hatch due next week and then I think that I'll try this after.

cute chick!

After all the trader joes posts I had seen, I had decided to try it. I have 8 eggs developing well and due to hatch next week! I also went to whole foods as I wanted some fertile brown, unfortunatley the eggs I got from there are 10 days old and my TJ eggs were only 3 days when I got them. So I guess Ill see what happens its too soon to tell on the brown eggs yet.

Ya know, I was intimidated about building an incubator, and here she is making one at 8, and is successful!
I'm with PC, you better be saving for college! She may be an engineer/ artist! Watch out!

I think she should try to get some credit from school on this. That's alot of work, I know she did it for discovery value, and that's tremendous, but I would talk to the school.....

As part of my son's research, we have been eating A LOT of fertile grocery store eggs the last three weeks. We normally eat a lot, but not this much. We have been counting the dots on the yokes that are fertile in each box.

Results so far: Trader Joe's has the highest fertility rate at 75% and this is based on 3 dozen. We have only checked one dozen Whole foods fertile brown eggs and it had 0%, and we aren't sure why. Nurti-fresh Chino Valley Ranchers has had 58% based on 3 boxes. The farmers market had 50% so far (based on 4 eggs) for a comparison. If you are interested in trying to incubate refrigerated grocery store eggs, out of these choices, I would say TJ's are your best bet right now in SoCal.

Here is the thread where we found the images we used to learn how to compare:

No more pips. Looks like just one for now. I will pull the eggs out tomorrow night. That would be 25 days. I have not heard of any taking any longer than that.

We will do the experiment again and if we have any success the second time around I will update the thread. I'll post another pic of Joey tomorrow.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement, the well wishes, and the congrats. It has made it more fun knowing we weren't in this alone.
