Kids Trader Joe's eggs hatched! - Update on Joey on post #147

Okay, It's official. I'm nuts. I went to the feedstore. Of course, not my local feedstore with 3 week old chicks. I went to Pomona. They just got a shipment of day old chicks this morning (3 day old) that included 2 Buff Orpingtons. I just had to go get him a friend. I could not wait until next week like a sane person when he would have plenty of friends when our hatchery chicks arrive. No, I drove 40 miles one way to get a friend the same age as him.

She is so cute. She is a tiny bit bigger than Joey. At first there was lots of pecking, but they seem content now.

Joey is the one in the back.

What's forty miles when a baby needs a friend?
Keep us updated with photos, will you please? I'd like to see what this little chick looks like as she grows.

I posted a video if you are curious how he is doing. Joey seems like a perfectly normal chick. My daughter has really wanted to hold and cuddle him. This is our compromise, gently get him used to us by feeding him out of our hand.

ahhh soo cute.. and we cuddled our chicks all the time and now that they are grown they always want to jump up in our laps and come running every time we are around .. they are very friendly.

My 1st set of trader Joes eggs are hatching today, so far 1 hatched and 2 more pipped. Out of the other 2 doz. eggs that were 11 day old at purchase 14 are fertile and growing well at day 10, none of the Whole foods eggs did anything.

Yeah!!!! Congratulations. I want to see pics! Do they look the same as Joey?

We didn't incubate the Whole Foods Fertile eggs we bought. None were fertile when we cracked them open, checked, and ate them. False advertizing? We noticed TJ's had the highest fertility.

Our Joey is doing well. S/he has a nice disposition so far. Gets along well with Amber. S/he is turning into a pretty white chicken and will be 2 weeks old on Tuesday. S/he doesn't have much comb development at all so I am hopeful Joey could be a pullet after all. I figure since she is leghorn or Hy-Line s/he should develop a red comb quickly, maybe by 4 weeks.

Our other grocery store egg chick is another story. His name is Dot. Scruffy looking fellow. It kind of looks like a California White chick with a couple of black spots on the yellow fluff. However, it came out of brown egg, so I don't know. I was expecting a brown production breed crossed with a leghorn or RIR. It is not very nice to the other chicks and kind of skittish when bumped into. I moved Dot out of the brooder with our new chicks from the hatchery that are the same age. He was picking on everyone. His is now in with Joey and Amber, the BO, they can hold their own better.

Glad to hear Joey's doing so well!

I've been thinking about those of you who've discovered that the Whole Foods eggs are duds. It looks to me as if either the eggs are really old, or they're selling infertile eggs at an inflated price!

Whether the company is aware of the quality of eggs I haven't a clue; however, it would be interesting to contact the company's national headquarters and let them know the result of these little experiments.
Please understand that I am NOT advocating any nastiness or fingerpointing at the company. But if it were my company, I would be interested in knowing that TJ's fertile eggs were hatching, and mine were not.
