Kids Trader Joe's eggs hatched! - Update on Joey on post #147

Quote:
I have already warned the kids these eggs only get to stay in the bator long enough to determine if they are are fertile and CAN develop, 7 to 10 days. We lost 4 chicks after starting zipping or shortly after hatching in the batch Dot came out of. It wasn't something I am really ready to go through all over again so soon. I may have a change of heart if the eggs not labeled as being fertile begin to develop on some weird stroke of luck. They are a dark pretty shade of brown.

I do glance at the egg shelves to see the dates each time I'm in Trader Joe's now. Even a neighbor that likes chickens, but doesn't have any, is now checking the dates when she is in there now. She bought them for me once. (We take turns filling each others grocery lists. Its something we started back in the SoCal Grocery strike some years ago and just still do because of the convenience. )

Update:

Report research is coming to an end this week. My son is in the process of writing some, but nothing is turned in yet. It is not actually due until late April.

Joey is doing well. I am pretty new to chicks, but I do believe Joey is a pullet. Joey's disposition is good, considering I have heard Leghorns are not the friendliest of chickens. We have 2 BR, 1 BO, 3 BA, 2 EE, and Joey who is a HyLine 98 or Leghorn hybrid of some sort. Joey is actually as friendly as the BO. She enjoys sitting with us/ on us and eating out of our hands. She doesn't care to be petted, but puts up with it. She is a beautiful solid white with no signs of pink or red in her comb at 5 weeks. The comb has not developed much at all and no waddles. She is almost completely feathered except under the wings, much more than the BO who is the same age. We are still praying we get to keep her.
These are not current photos. They were taken about 7 to 10 days ago, at about 4 weeks old. I'll take more recent ones and post again later.

Dot
got sent to the farm, so no more photos of him.

Cariboujaguar, I am sorry to hear you haven't found the fertile eggs at your Trader Joes. Have you asked if another one in your area maybe carries them? Fertile eggs in the grocery store can't be just a Southern California thing, can it?

No, it isn't just a Southern California thing. I have been reading this thread for weeks, and started checking the eggs at our Trader Joe's here in the Bay Area. They have fertile eggs. I can't have more chickens, and don't have a bator, so I won't be trying your experiment. However, it's cool to know that it's possible.

I liked seeing the pictures of Joey -- she's really cute. It's nice to hear that she has a nice personality, too.

The last time I checked my Trader Joes, they didn't have the fertile eggs anymore. I'm hoping it might be just temporary.
