Kids Trader Joe's eggs hatched! - Update on Joey on post #147

That is so sweet to say. Thank you very much. I wish everyone could meet Joey. It is amazing how nice she is. All my future chickens will be measured against her. I am very curious if it is the breed/ mix she is or if it was her upbringing, Nature vs. Nurture.

If OCChickens get to have pullets from the batch she is hatching, I hope they are just like Joey.

Thank you!! We hope so too!!

This thread has been absolutely amazing/intriguing to follow! Congratulations to your daughter!! This also makes me feel like I have better odds at hatching some Mille Fleur d'Uccle eggs I put in the 'bator yesterday...they had been in the 'fridge, but I decided at the last minute before their parents went to their new home that I would give it a go...I figured that if they were in the fridge I'd have pretty poor chances of any babies, but now I feel a little relief...we'll see...20 days to go!!

Good luck & keep us posted!

Well, sorry to continue to make this long story even longer, but my son got picked from his school a couple of weeks ago to move on to the school district level of the science fair with his project this weekend.

When we found out, I decided I should finally contact Trader Joes since their name appears throughout the project research. Basically, I emailed customer service and told them the stats and a thank you for their product being as labeled. Here is there response I got today:
Thank you so much for making us aware of the use of our Trader Joe's
Fertile Eggs in your son's Science Project. Our fertilized eggs have
been fertilized but due to processing and handling, very few of these
eggs would ever fully develop into a chick.

Thank you again,

Nicki K.

This must be their standard company response to questions about their fertilized eggs so as not to gross out people that don't eat Balut.

Congratulations to your son on the recognition his project has received!

My stats on the TJ's eggs are roughly 5 chicks out of 4 dozen eggs, and, interestingly, the chicks all came from the same dozen.

My 5 chicks are 2.5 wk old and also seem very sweet.

oh tell your son congrats, I won the a state science fair once on a beta (the fish) experiment to see what made them aggressive color, shape, or a combo of both. My control group was as well documented as it should have been so I got 2nd place. Made me happy none the less

it was lots of kids from all of PA

You should send the letter back with a picture of the chicks and tell them your hatch rate lol

Good luck to your son!

Were the eggs you got from Trader Joe's refrigerated when you bought them??

Yes. And we weren't the only ones to do it with refrigerated eggs either. I think cutiepieacres had some that had been in the fridge case at the store for 11 days.

AHappychick-Thanks for the congrats. That's cool about your Beta fish and the state fair!

I believe the district will be it for him since his written report and his graphs are a little thin. If you talk to him about the project you can really tell he learned a lot. He enjoyed working on it so that is all that matters. I especially enjoy seeing him excited about helping take care of the chickens.

OCChickens- thanks for the congrats and do you have pics of your babies posted recently? Is the feather sexing of the 2.5 week old chicks still appearing to be accurate? cutiepieacres said you could see differences in the comb development really early on.

My last (3rd) hatch which includes the TJ's is like a 3rd child -- much less photographed than the earlier ones! Thanks for the impetus -- I'll post a pic of them soon & take a look at their combs etc.
