My Stat professor advised to ALWAYS question statistics, because 98.3% of them are usually made up "on-the-spot!" And Yeah ... he really did tell us that! We were shocked, then rolling! I think that was the only Math class I ever actually enjoyed ... and it had very little to do with the content.
