Basically, idiot-proof it for tiny idiots. Coturnix have had most of their survival instincts bred out.

Use 1/2". Lay a piece of 1/4" inside for babies and remove it when done. Dual purpose. If you leave it 1/4", you will be cleaning it hourly. Yuck.

1/4" is removeable for cleaning too.
