Honestly, I may just use a scalpel next time, as I have those and I know they'll cut flesh quickly and deeply enough. Oh oh...do you think a machete would work for decapitation? I chop things with mine all the time.

That's good info--wait until they relax. I think we were both a little nervous, it being the first time we'd done this kind of thing.
A machete would work just fine. So would a scalpel.

You should secure the cone in place. If you are doing it inside, perhaps you could attach it to a board and clamp the board to something stable. The cone should be small end pointing down. The upside down bird will clam down pretty quickly.

Most people using a cone, cut the carotid artery, allow the bird to bleed out and then remove the head after the blood stops draining.

Wait, wait, wait. I want you to draw a picture of how you think I did this. Cause I'm getting some pretty wild mental images of how one would use a kill cone without securing it and having the small part pointed up, like some kind of fancy metal rooster collar.

I have seen pics of dummies that use the cone horizontal.

If the cone is secured in place and pointing down, the victim should not be pulling its head back into the cone.

Alrighty, I'll check my set up, but I made a little upside down T shaped platform out of 2x4s that I could clamp to my table and screwed it directly to the top of it, with the flat part against the wood and the small opening pointing downwards. I'm gonna double check the size...maybe it was too narrow for the bird to sink all the way in.

Could you take a picture of your set up?
