Wait, wait, wait. I want you to draw a picture of how you think I did this. Cause I'm getting some pretty wild mental images of how one would use a kill cone without securing it and having the small part pointed up, like some kind of fancy metal rooster collar.

Try and get the bird to relax first. The killing cone was made to hold the bird in a way that it would relax, from the pressure on its wings and being upside down. So, once its in the cone you can hold it in place for a few seconds until it relaxes, and it should stay put.

I don't know what birds they're testing these things on -- my birds hate being held upside-down.
Well, except for Zapraska, but considering the fact that he was literally dropped on his head when he was little (okay, side -- and it was an accident!), he's not really a good example, I don't think.

Hold them by the feet. They quiet down in about 30 seconds.

I spooked my broody and her spur got caught on the roost. She was upside down hanging by one leg for 4-5 minutes. (Didn’t realize she was in the coop when I tipped through the side with a chainsaw to cut the pop door)

Oh. No wonder they aren't mellow -- I never hold onto them for 30 seconds, as they start thrashing bloody murder.
