Yeah, I went over a lot of them. They were quite helpful, but nothing I saw showed me what to do with a stubborn head, or a floppy floppy blood beast escaping from the cone.

@duluthralphie would you show the type of cutters that you use for decapitation?

I did not. I had to hold the head cause he kept trying to pull it back into the cone. [Edited to add: Not while I was doing the deed, but before. I had to hold the head so I could cut the right spot]. I'll try to remember that for next time.

I am different from everyone here I think. I use a .22.

I use a .22 on guineas and turkeys. Chickens get the hatchet.

Try and get the bird to relax first. The killing cone was made to hold the bird in a way that it would relax, from the pressure on its wings and being upside down. So, once its in the cone you can hold it in place for a few seconds until it relaxes, and it should stay put.

You should secure the cone in place. If you are doing it inside, perhaps you could attach it to a board and clamp the board to something stable. The cone should be small end pointing down. The upside down bird will clam down pretty quickly.

Most people using a cone, cut the carotid artery, allow the bird to bleed out and then remove the head after the blood stops draining.

Honestly, I may just use a scalpel next time, as I have those and I know they'll cut flesh quickly and deeply enough. Oh oh...do you think a machete would work for decapitation? I chop things with mine all the time.

That's good info--wait until they relax. I think we were both a little nervous, it being the first time we'd done this kind of thing.

Some people use a machete for decapitation. It still requires a chopping block.
