Kill a racoon? go to jail

So easy to sit here and say what should have been done, or that such and such would have prevented the predation in the first place. If "LED eyes" stopped predation, I think that almost every coop would be so outfitted. A quick thread search turned up folks who tried them, and if not for the fact that they wasted hard earned money, (and perhaps placed their faith in a product that they thought would keep the predators away) on a "promise", these posts would be humorous.

Yes, he could have put a hot wire around his coop. Let me ask the readers? How many of you have electric fencing around your coop and run? Neither do I. Unfortunately, most of us hope that tonight will not be the night that a serious predator shows up to test our defenses.

Using animal urine as a deterrent? seriously? I'd have to be out dabbing the urine every night with the rains we've had this fall. And, agreed, while large predator urine may scare Rocky, it very well might bring in the large predator!

I think we are only hearing a tiny little bit of the story.

BTW, FarmerLED, I'm wondering what company you work for? And, what products you sell?

This right here is why i chose the shotgun, at close range i basically couldn't miss or draw out an already unpleasant experience. I did however blow any chances for animal control testing the raccoon.

I'm surprised they told you to cut off a possibly rabid racoon's head. A great way to be exposed to its fluids. Seems like a really dumb idea.

There was a video on here a while back of a trapper dispatching a racoon with a pellet rifle. The thing dropped over dead, so he knew where to shoot it. No one will hear one of those.

Just my opinion but there's really no way to humanely kill something. The act of killing is inhumane in itself we just need to tell ourselves we're doing it in a humane way to be ok with it.
Don't get me wrong I've killed many many a creature in my life time.
When it goes quickly and efficiently then you could say it was humane. When it goes sideways sure looks anything but humane no matter the method.
I know many people that would say drowning is the most humane way. I used to trap when I was a kid. Drowning was standard practice. It was said to be humane. Truth was it wasn't so much because of that as it was because you didn't want holes or blood on your pelts.
I've also known of bucketing puppies. That was said to be humane but of course downing puppies isn't humane.
Agree with the other poster people who have almost drown would say it is a terrible thing but there's many people out there that have been shot in the head and lived. They'll tell you there's nothing humane about shooting something.
Look at how animals are slaughtered for market. Electricution, bolt guns even people here who slit chickens throats and let them bleed out. Shelter dogs that get injections. No matter how you end a life someone somewhere is gonna say it's done in a humane way while many others see nothing humane about it and have opinions of other ways they think would be humane.
Killing is killing, dead is dead. Nothing humane about that. When it has to be done just hope its as quick and painless as can be expected and live with that.
Raccoons got to my neighbor's chickens. Popped their heads off. I don't find that humane either.

I haven't read the other comments but I think that drowning is inhumane and he should not have done it but I don't necessarily think he should be arrested for that. Maybe just a warning or a fine or something and then if he did it again or made a habit of drowning animals THEN maybe jail. Idk. But as cruel as I think drowning was, I think jail is harsh. But it doesn't say how long the sentence is so maybe he just got held and they let him out.

But I think it's harsh especially given that there are plenty of domestic animals being severely abused and neglected and they don't do squat but yet they arrest man for protecting his flock, even if it was done in a cruel manner?

I will say though, again, drowning that raccoon was very cruel and I don't condone it.

We had problems with coons once. Actually a family of young coons. And we set out no-kill traps. We caught 3 babies a mom and a male coon. We did not kill them bc they were so young but we took them to a broad creek with lots of fish and vegatation. It was about a mile and a half from nearby neighbor hoods and along a small rural road.:highfive:

That reminds me of a situation where someone I worked with moved a skunk from her backyard to waaaay out there in the country. I asked her where she had dropped the skunk off and it turned out it was within walking distance of my house
