Pringel, at least here in Idaho, since you were using a live trap, you would be required to have a trapping license. Does not matter if you think they were going after your chickens. You didn't catch the animal "in the act" so it was not "in defense of...".
Second, if it is a Fisher, it might indeed be a protected species. It is in many states.
My advice would be to first go buy a trapping license. They are not very expensive. Second, if a Fisher is protected in your state and you catch one, rather than shoot it, call the Game Warden. They will cart it off and release it somewhere else. It might be a pain in the butt, but it sure is better than a possible $10,000 fine.
