Killed a snake... What do you think it was?

My grandad told me a long time ago that if there is rain and shelter from the sun the cotton mouths can travel a long way.

Could be some teenagers caught it and took it home then released it never having known the danger they faced. Kids do stupid things in the summer looking for a thrill.

I was wishing I had gotten some more pictures. We tossed it into the woods. The only other good one I have is this

Here is a picture of our Western Diamond Back ...

I'm guessing that you did not see rattles on the end if it's tail?

Oooh, yeah. I'm not any kind of snake pro, but with that full picture it's exactly what we'd brand a cottonmouth.

My uncles chicken got ahold of a copperhead and when she did she killed it and ate it, when other hens tried to have a piece she hogged it thought that was so funny

My vote is for cottonmouth as well, although the patterns can vary in many breeds. It just does not look like a copperhead at all.

Aside from the pupil shape and head shape, you can also tell the difference between a venomous and non-venomous snake by the scales from the vent to the tail.

Maybe not the best reference, but this site illustrates the vent to tail scales.

So why would this fellow be so far from any pool of water? I'm thinking they eat fish and frogs so it'd have to be a real body of water to sustain it and there's nothing like that around here

Just wondering if I should expect more...
