Hello all!! I am Scott. Kind of new to chickens. I live in Graham Wa. We had chickens growing up. This is the first time of doing them on my own. I have 5 Rhode Island Red Hens. They have a small 4'x30' run. Little house. I clean it weekly. New flock fresh. Only takes 10 minutes.

I just joined here but have used this site for reference from time to time when I purchased the chicks in April. Decided to join today. Getting 1 egg a day right now. Hope that changes soon. Eggs are small also. Ill research to see if I am not feeding them enough. They like blackberries and cherry tomatoes. I plan on turning them loose in the garden after season is over.

Hi Scott and welcome to BYC :welcome They'll appreciate it and help clean it out and fertilize it for you. They should each be getting about 4.5 oz of good quality 16% protein layer feed. Treats not to exceed 10% of diet. RIRs are good foragers... Also give them grit and oyster shell free choice. Again welcome and glad you're with us. :ya

Hi :welcome Scott,

Glad you could join us here! Have they only just started laying? It can sometimes take newpullets a while to get their laying machines in order so your eggs should get bigger as time goes on.

Good luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Hello Scott, Welcome to BYC when chickens begin to lay their eggs are small. It will take them a few months before they are the size your expecting. Give them time to have their bodies adjust to laying eggs. How old was your chicks when you got them. I have a RIR and she was hatched around the 1st of April. We picked her up on the 3rd of April so I hope she will start laying for me soon. My others breeds are just beginning to lay. Best of Luck with your flock.

Well this is day 2 that I now have gotten 2 eggs!!! 1 of them looks like it was sprayed with texture you put on your walls before painting. 5 Rhode Island Reds. Is this normal?
