Kindness of strangers

ray's two cents :

Air is still free down here. I suppose we should be thankful.

But still a nice thing to do!

You should be very thankful. Both air and water are $.75 - $1.00 (for about 3 minutes worth) at some gas stations. No free air or water anywhere here.

I usually use my air compressor but I was already out and about.

Juggling a run from an abusive ex while 5 months pregnant with a 7 month old and an 18 month old, I had no money left ever. My neighbors paid my electric and water to make sure the kids and I had basics. They were the kindest people ever.

I have one that I paid forward. Me and a boyfriend were at Denny's one night. As we walked in a man was sitting on the bench out front. After awhile he came in and asked how much a cup of coffee was in very broken English. As we were leaving I noticed that he was still sitting on the bench and that he was crying. I stopped to ask him what was wrong, my BF got huffy and stalked off to the car. The guy was about 30, wearing old but clean clothes. Turns out his mother had died and he had snuck over border from Mexico to be at her funeral. He had no money for food and didn't know how he was going to get back to Mexico. I promptly went back into Denny's made him order a dinner and a sandwich (the super bird?) so he would have something to eat later. I also went across the street and rented a motel room for the night and gave him the key (it was winter, cold and raining). I still wish to this day that I had cash to give him but I only had money to use on a credit card. This happened 20 yrs ago and I still think about this man scared, alone and grieving in a strange country. My BF was upset and asked why I did all of that for a stranger. I told him "Because someday, somewhere, somehow this may be me or you in this position and you had better pray that someones heart is listening".

Wow, that's a lovely story. I love your way of thinking, that one day it could be someone close to us. That's so very true.

The act of kindness that was done for me:
I work 2 jobs. Mondays are the worst. My day starts Sunday at 1 pm when I leave for work, I work 8 hrs then go to my second job and work another 8 hrs. When I get out of my second job I then drive to the college and sit in class untill12:30 pm. On that day as I was driving home I was soooooo tired as I had only had 4 hrs of sleep the day before. As I was driving I realized I had a flat. I just wanted to cry as I only had 6 hrs to get home eat, sleep, shower and head back to work. I pulled over to the side of the road and started setting up to change my tire, that's when I realized my spare was also flat. I sat down and really did start to cry. As I was sitting there in the dirt on the side of the road a very young couple pulled up next to me and asked if I needed help. They took off my tire, took it to the tire shop and had patched and put it back on for me. They also refused the money I offered them. I am very thankful for their act of kindness.
