Kirby Thread *NEW PICTURE 7/11

As a newbie chicken owner it's been nice to see how much the feathers grow in. I'm always looking forward to the next step of development. My chicks are only a week old and I can't believe how many wing feathers are already there!

I wouldn't be too sure about him NOT "attacking people or other animals". When a rooster is raised to be comfortable around people and other animals I have found them to be more brave once his instincts kick in and he has a flock to protect. My Rooster does not fear me and his instinct to protect his girls is stronger that his love for me. He attacks me quite often. I just reach down and pick him up and carry him around for a while, when I put him down he walks off and leaves me alone.
Kirby is the coolest!! Good for you!!

He hasn't attacked anyone yet, and him and the hens are in a love/hate relationship - he tends to give them space. I think he sees me as "his hen" because he does not like it when the hens come near me or even the dog. He challenges them and then runs back to my feet.
I guess we will have to see when his instincts eventually kick in.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone.
He has a little bit of fuzz left on his head and pink tipped wings.

Well, I will be in Florida for the next week or two - so my boyfriend will be going over to my house to feed and water him. There won't be updates for a while until I get back home. But as of now he has been roosting with the hens but doesn't follow them out of the yard like the hens follow each other. He is very handsome and getting big.

Miss me?

KIRBY IS CROWING.
My grandma just called and told me.
Unfortunately, I won't be back home until next weekend.
I had wisdom teeth surgery Friday and I will be getting my stitches removed this Friday, but I am so excited to hear his crowing and seeing how big he has gotten. I miss him<3

Avla, you seem like a wonderful mom to sweet Kirby!

I don't see anything wrong with the whole dying the chicks thing, it's easier for you to tell them apart. My only question is if it doesn't work with darker colored chicks. Hmm. Like, Australorps, SLWs, etc...

He's adorable!

What a little man, crowing.

Good luck with him! Hope you two are reunited soon!

Thank you!

Kirby's spurs are growing in quite large, would it be a good idea to trim them/remove them? And how would I go about doing so?
My grandma's dog pesters him a lot (standing over him, licking his face, etc.) and Kirby got mad at him and ended up hurting him.

BTW. I'll have some new pics up Sunday.

Kirby is a perfect name for a fluffy pink chick. LOVE IT!

I love how dedicated you are to Kirby. Flock animals or not, I don't see Kirby complaining? If he is attached to you its because you have gained his trust and he chose to be so attached to you. He has two smoking hot hens to flirt with. If he wanted to go off and flirt and mingle then he would, and the time will come when he totally will.

Just because you raised him solo doesn't mean he lost his chicken instincts. It just means you will have a long lasting bond with him!!

Keep up the good work. You are doing a fantastic job and Kirby has a wonderful home!!
