Kirby Thread *NEW PICTURE 7/11

I just have to say that Kirby is the most adorable thing I have ever seen!! I'm sorry, but I think that it just looks really neat!!! I've never seen dyed chicks before. How do they actually inject the egg, without cracking it? Sorry if that sounds naive. With that being said, I understand the view that buying these dyed chicks is just putting money in the pockets of those that dye them. And although I agree that it probably isn't such a good idea because it attracts the wrong kind of owner, I would totally buy one(or more) if I saw them! Of course, like you, I did ALOT of research before buying my chicks/chickens. Not too many people do. Kirby is very lucky. I think we have alot of pots calling the kettles black on here. Don't sweat the negative. You are being responsible, and appears that you are caring for him well. You have stated on more that one occasion that he will be housed with other hens, so I don't know why everyone is making a stink about him having to be in a flock. I have seen MANY threads about BYC's having house chickens, all seem to do fine, Besides, you have stated many times that he will live in the coop with the other chickens. I would be more concerned if Kirby had health issues that weren't being addressed responsibly, or didn't have adequate shelter etc. Do you think that there would be such a fuss about this guy being a (temporary)house chicken, if he wasn't dyed? Probably not. Tons of people have lone chicks that they need to keep indoors until able to be outside. A chick that is doted on and adored by his owner? Really people?

What about the the numerous bycers that say they brought home chicks from the feed store because they looked sickly, etc. and either they wanted to rescue them, or make their last hours happy ones. I don't recall posters raising a fuss about this being a bad move, because it encourages food stores to keep stocking chicks with issues. They sure jumped on you for buying a dyed chick. For goodness sakes, it's not permanent, you didn't do it to him. You are giving him excellent care. If you chose to keep him as an indoor pet - that's your business. Kirby seems very happy with the arrangement and that's what matters.

Faykoko!!! you might be on to something. I have many many rosecomb hens and would like to select my new roo from a certain hen. I am pretty good at collecting the eggs as soon as they are laid because I hear "the call" and rosecombs "call" for about 10 min after each egg

I can usually see who laid it and write on the egg. But, at hatching time, things get mixed up...

Thanks everyone!

Kirby has grown even more over night, his tail feathers are coming in even more so, I'm really excited to see the finished product of his feathering - I think he's gonna make a gorgeous bird.

so how funny does he look with white wings, white tail and pink (hot pink) body?? Inquiring minds want to know

He looks pretty goofy.

But, his "big boy" feathers seem a lot softer then when my grandma's girls' feathers came in.

I bought Kirby at a local feed store, they are usually only sold around Easter, but there are methods to dying your own chicks.

Hi there!

Just thought I'd add my 2c worth after reading through all the comments on this thread. I'm a BIG animal rights fusspot and I always get annoyed at people who dress their dogs up as fairy princesses, or dye their fur and use doggy perfume on them. But in this case I really can't see the harm at all. It was done to him in the egg, so it's not like he had to suffer the process, and it's temporary, for pete's sake.

And all these people objecting to you keeping him on his own and apart from a flock, well, that's temporary too. Personally it sounds to me like they're more annoyed about the pink dye-job but they can't muster a good enough argument against it, so they're just criticising you on other grounds.

And apart from all that, I think he looks way cool. Can I join the fan club please?
