Kissing your chickens is bad for your health

To all the chickens and pets "kissers" !
You should know that in every animal lives an
Giant army composed from trillions of ,bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi( yeasts), The biologist call it the natural microflora or microbiota. Almost all of them are essential to the animal health, because they provide very necessary vitamins, and They prevents the establishing of pathogenic in the animal. In fact if you count the number of cells that compose the human body for any human cell there is approximately 9 cells from the microbiota, so in fact we are 10% humans and 90% bacteria!
The benign influence of the microbiota is very dependent if the bacteria of the microbiota remains in there natural place. For example in the large intestine populate the major part of the human microbiota, that is very important for our health, we gain this benefit as long the microbe remains in the gut, but if it enter to outer places in the body, like when the appendix erupts, or some feces enters the blood stream trough a wound, the same microbes can cause death du to peritonitis or sepsis. The sam case when microbiota of one creature invade to other creatures, see foe exampel the Ebola virus, most of biologist agree that this virus live peacefully in fruit batts in Africa causing no visible damage to the bats, but if this virus travels to Primates like Chimpanzee or Humans it can cause almost 80% of death. So if you want to kiss your chicken, your dog, your cat or your african elephant pet again, you should consider the fact that they are in fact bacteria production factories, and that some of this bacteria, viruses or Protista have the capacity to make you and your children very very sick, or even kill you!
I wrote it as a zoologist not only as a BYC member.
Benny.

But this is what I don't understand. Humans are full of bacteria and the like too, is the government going to issue a warning we should stop hugging and kissing each other? I think there are far worse and more common health issues to be concerned about. This is a waste of time.

Humans have their microbiota for millennia, and in this years there was some selection and now there is a steady state that we and our microbes live in peace(mutual symbiosis ) but you should understand that this situation is very local! I will give you an example : when Hernan cortez arrived to Mexico with his 500 o so conquistadors, They destroyed the Aztec empire not because their weapons, but mainly because of the diseases they brought with them from Europe. This raises the question how is it possible that a disease that destroyed the Indians and was brought by the Spaniels did not kill them first? The answer is that the intensity of the disease depends on how long the host population are exposed to the pathogen. The more longer exposure, more selection occurs that kills the weak host, and only hosts that are resistant to the pathogen survive. And thus is the situation that you and the other human that surround you are in it. This is not the situation with your pets! So kissing humans ( not all humans....) is quit safe, kissing pets no very safe!

You have made some historical mistakes.

Cortez took over instantly. He did not sit around waiting for people to die of disease. His people won because they were fighting to kill. The natives did not want to kill the invaders at first, they wanted to bring them to their temple to sacrifice to the gods. They had many rituals and superstitions concerning the correct way of killing someone, this slowed them down so that they did not have a chance. Also Cortez had some horses and many more advanced weapons. The winning of this battle had nothing to do with disease.

Second, disease did not destroy the Indians. (Yes, a great many of them died- which proves my point that humans can spread deadly disease to one another when we interact.) Native Americans are still alive and well today, contrary to popular belief. A few tribes died out, but hundreds more are still around.

Also, I think you mean Spaniards... not spaniels, LOL.

But also, the regular microbiota of humans is completely different from the one from whales, birds, cats, etc.

What is normal for a human can kill another specie. Of course a germ carried by a human can kill another human also.. but what are the chances to keep humans far from each other? We'll always have planes, theaters, cafeterias, hospital.. where humans closely interact.

Humans versus chicken or whales have somewhat less chances of interacting, so it's easier to say "stop kissing a chicken" than "stop shaking hands with humans" :).

Gee this is a hard subject for a foreign language I feel like I can't say half of what I'd like to say.

http://www.pbs.org/gunsgermssteel/variables/smallpox.html

Here some to quotas from them:
#"The Spanish conquest of Yucatán took almost 170 years. The whole process could have taken longer were it not for three separate epidemics that took a heavy toll on the Native Americans, killing almost 75% of the population and causing the collapse of Mesoamerican cultures. Some believe that Old World diseases like smallpox caused the death of 90 to 95 percent of the native population of the New World."

#Smallpox is believed to have arrived in the Americas in 1520 on a Spanish ship sailing from Cuba, carried by an infected African slave. As soon as the party landed in Mexico, the infection began its deadly voyage through the continent. Even before the arrival of Pizarro, smallpox had already devastated the Inca Empire, killing the Emperor Huayna Capac and unleashing a bitter civil war that distracted and weakened his successor, Atahuallpa.
In the era of global conquest which followed, European colonizers were assisted around the world by the germs which they carried. A 1713 smallpox epidemic in the Cape of Good Hope decimated the South African Khoi San people, rendering them incapable of resisting the process of colonization. European germs also wreaked devastation on the aboriginal communities of Australia and New Zealand.
More victims of colonization were killed by Eurasian germs, than by either the gun or the sword, making germs the deadliest agent of conquest.

Please read and tell me if I am the one who did the mistake.

Don't trust wikipedia or PBS. An actual historical source would be better.

Do you know where the Yucatan is? Do you know where that word comes from? It is a unique interaction between explorers and Natives, look it up if you care to do so. Regardless, the Yucatan conquest does not have anything to do with the first battle. Cortez beheaded the emperor-priest of the Incas. I can't explain it in more detail as this is a family friendly site.

As for number 2, yes smallpox killed many people. That is my point. Epidemics are usually caused by humans interacting with other humans not animals.

Mesoamerican cultures have not collapsed. Native people and their Nations are still here, as they always have been. Saying smallpox destroyed Mesoamerican cultures is like saying the Black Plague destroyed European cultures. It's just not true. Why are people so determined to believe indigenous peoples are no longer around?

Anyway, none of this has much to do with chickens. If someone wants to kiss their chickens, let them. People kiss their dogs and cats, why would chickens be any different?

Your attitude is somewhat patronizing . Especially towered people that you do not know , and do not know anything about them . I do not need to know the literal meaning of the word Yucatán to know where is the peninsula location.
From my perspective you can kiss any animal you see if you want to, it's not my concern. just keep in mind that most of the pathogens affecting humans originated in farm animals .

As long as you don't make your chooks crook....I think it's ok!!!
